Are there any umm....older students (over 28 lol)....in our class? Just curious if there are any others...other then me. 😳😎
No worries, I'm 32 and married...likely the oldest in our class. My tour guide at the interviews was a first year and 33, she said she wasn't the oldest in her class. So there's obviously a few of us, ahem, mature students. But like fine wine, people only get better with age🙂

I just mailed my check! I'm going to be a Hokie!!! :soexcited:I couldn't be more excited! Only 5 months until classes start!

Wish I could make it to prospective weekend, but I have to work and save money to move. Have fun and I'll be there in spirit (while I'm actually toiling away during 3rd shift at an emergency hospital).

Agreed, Wine does get better with age...ahem........oldie but goodie for sure. I am glad I am not the only one over 30 in our class.

Has the OTS housing list been sent out yet to the Class of 2016?

So after a week of soul-searching about where we want to spend the next four years, my wife and I decided that regardless of what happens (within the realm of reasonably happening) with the OSU waitlist, we will be going to VMRCVM this Fall! So flippin' excited to be a Hokie and to get started!

Anybody planning on living in Christiansburg? I've got a feeling my wife might have to travel to Roanoke to get work (she's finishing her teaching credential in a couple months), so it would be easier to get out to the big city on the 81. Does anyone know which (if any) apartment complexes out there are "undergrad" so we can avoid those? As we are still in California for a few months (school for her, last couple months of work/saving money for me), we probably won't be able to finalize housing until sometime in June at the earliest if we want to actually see the apartment before signing a lease.

Looking forward to meeting all the c/o 2016 and current students!

Congrats!! 🙂 being a Hokie is a pretty amazing experience!

I'm going to the open house next weekend with a couple other 2016'ers from VT and elsewhere. We'll be wandering around the vet school all day, so just let me know if you'd like to join up with us! And if you wanna catch up with us later in the day, I can PM you my cell number.
If we get a lil group together, I'd even be willing to buy us a couple pizzas at West End (one of the many places to get awesome food on campus) cause I have some extra money leftover on my student meal plan this semester
They usually have food at open house but it tends to be a bit overpriced 🙄 plus West End's better anyways 😉

How do you access the OTS housing list? Do you have to have received your packet after submitting your deposit? I only just mailed mine in yesterday.

Have you received a confirmation email from the school stating they received your deposit? Once you get that email you can set up your VT PID (unless you already go to VT, then you already have one...), I believe the webmaster for The Exchange sets you up with a temporary Scholar account you can use to view the exchange.

At least thats how it worked out for me...

My husband and I are looking around Christiansburg and the surrounding rural areas, as well as in Blacksburg. We have some pretty specific space requirements, we need a garage or large shed and a fenced yard. My husband may have to drive to Roanoke to work as well. He's a carpenter and the job situation looks pretty grim in Blacksburg.

No, I haven't. Just mailed the deposit in yesterday so I'll probably get it sometime this week. Can't wait!

I love the dancing banana!
Wish I could be there to meet y'all. I really can hardly wait to move up to Blacksburg and start school! Everyone on SDN that will be in our class seems really cool-I think the next 4 years are going to be amazing!😀

Hey everyone, I just mailed my check last week and need to start looking for somewhere to live. I need some suggestions since I've only been down there for my interview. If anyone is looking for a roommate for the fall let me know. I'm 22, and graduating from Penn State in May. I've got a 2 year old black lab, so I'd really like to live somewhere with a fence and a yard but that's about my only needs so far. If anyone wants to contact me or knows someone looking for a roommate my email is [email protected]

I'm in.... 😀

now to scramble to find a way to get to the Open House this weekend....

hey,
can any c/o 2015ers that are Maryland in-state tell me how much their cost of attendance was for this year? i guess that's tuition + living expenses? that's how financial aid/loans are calculated/offered, right?
anyway. any wisdom/facts would be muuuuch appreciated!

I might be looking for a roommate to live in a 2 bedroom at Smith's landing which is really near the Vet school, its 1100 so each would play 550 plus half the utilities. No Pets though (well tank pets okay i think). Email me if anyone is interested. [email protected]

1100 for a 2 BR? Is that a townhouse? Seems a bit high for Blacksburg.

Hooray!! I was wondering where you'd gone. Congrats! :highfive:

Smith's Landing is a new apartment complex over by the sheep barn off of Plantation Rd. They're targeting the "luxury" niche - but they could have picked a better place, it smells like sheep in the summer. 😉

thanks! 😀
yeah, i was pretty embarrassed after i got waitlisted... i felt like i had been over-confident or something, so i kind of hesitated about the forum... 😳
but yayyyyy, maybe i wasn't totally imperceptive about the good parts of my interview...

Aw, that must have been a let down. =( It happens. And they made the right decision in the end. 😉

yup! =)

hahaha, and their initial decision does make sense, especially when i consider the word vomit that happened in 2 of my stations. or maybe it was more verbal diarrhea. either way, it was like verbal gastrointestinal explosion. i guess the average of the other really good stations didn't quite cancel out the other 2... haha

thanks! 😀

Awesome! That's so good to hear, congrats! I hope I get a call soon!

Ah, I see. My house is a 3 BR for about the same price, huge yard, deck, and right off downtown, but I just filled my last roommate spot with a current first-year. Can't wait for 2nd year to be over. You all are going to love 1st year. I miss Anatomy.

Yeah its a bit expensive, but not to me LOL but I have lived in South Florida and Louisiana after Katrina....so thats cheap!!

Where did you find the Exchange? I got an email to gain access to Scholar and I found all of the new student info, like vaccines, checklist, registration etc.. but I can't find the housing list. I logged in to scholar just using my regular email address, the email from VT said there was a problem with new PID's at the moment.
I really want to get a house from a current student. All the Craigslist ads that I have replied to have turned out to be scams.

There should be a tab under the top banner on Scholar that says "The Exchange."

Yeah, I also do not have The Exchange tab on my Scholar. I think this is because we are a guest log-in and don't have a VT email yet? I have a "My Workspace" tab and a "CVM Class of 2016" tab and that's it.

I don't log in to The Exchange with my VT email - (they have been unable to add new PID's to scholar from what I've heard) - I use my guest account.

I received a couple messages to my personal email account (one I did my supplemental app with VMRCVM) once my deposit had cleared: one of the messages was to create my PID (and VT email), another was from the webmaster of the Exchange (the sender shows "The Exchange"). If you don't have that email from "The Exhange" yet, its possible that functionality has not been added yet...

does anyone know how real estate is down in blacksburg? what would the neighborhood/area closest to the vet school be called... i was toying with the idea of looking at foreclosures or something in the area, and asking my parents to maybe help with a down payment, and maybe pay a mortgage instead of rent for the next 4 years. i think i'd be a good landlord 🙂
does anyone know anything about this kind of stuff in blacksburg?
it's a very premature idea but maybe worth pursuing?

I think my mom has a TON of information on this, actually, haha. She's big in to real estate and I think she dug some stuff about about Blacksburg vet school material recently. I can ask her what she has and send it your way, if you'd like. =)

If you can get on The Exchange, the OTS posting had some for-sale ads on it, too!

i can't get on the exchange yet, from what i've gandered from the forum.. because i am a commitment phobe. maybe after this weekend? idk i'm still weighing some options. but i did want to maybe see some stuff with my parents...

big life decisions are intimidating. 😕

I am looking to buy as well. I would love some information as well.

Thanks for the responses. I don't have the Exchange tab yet, or an email from the webmaster (haha, funny title), or an email that my check cleared-which it did yesterday.
I'll just have to wait, which I am are terrible at.

Yeah, house buying is intimidating. My husband and I have considered it multiple times, but have always decided that we're not ready-and we're in our 30's! I like calling someone when stuff breaks and not having to pay for it.
More power to you and good luck🙂

does anyone know which immunizations VMRCVM requires? all I could find was rabies and Tdap I think? also, I haven't accepted te offer yet (still deciding/waiting for some information) so I don't have an email account, did they say how much their rabies vaccine series would cost?

If you can't find a fenced yard don't stress too much. Blacksburg has a HUGE awesome dog park. I got like 3-4 times a week with my dog and she loves it.

And Smith's landing does allow pets if you want one!

This was under visiting students (quick google search of "vmrcvm vaccination requirements"): http://www.vetmed.vt.edu/acad/dvm/visitingsr/Immunizations.pdf

It just lists rabies (documentation of titer) and tetanus w/in past 10 years

I did not see anything mentioning how much the student health center would charge... I'm calling my doctor this week while I still have a good insurance plan through work to schedule my series...

Dr. Pelzer told me that the student health center will do it but at full cost ($700 for the series), and the student health plans - both those provided by Virginia Tech and the more specific plan provided by VMRCVM - don't cover it.

I should have done it through my job when I got the chance. :smack: Oh well.

She said other alternatives include family physicians or city/county health administrations. It's a multi-week process (I think the last booster is at day 28?) so I think I'm gonna try to knock it out this summer...

Ouch! (figuratively and physically)

Edit: I suppose working at an animal shelter does have its perks 😉 - Just found out my insurance fully covers the immunization!

Seriously? That sucks ass. The grad student health insurance covered half of it when I was there 🙁

Foo. That's weird, it'd make sense for them to cover vet students too, no?

Maybe I misunderstood... but I'm pretty positive that's what she said. Hmm.

Congratulations, class of 2016! VMRCVM is great, and I hope you love it here as much as I do!

If anyone is interested in spending the summer in Blacksburg, I'm trying to find a subletter/kitten-sitter for my apartment. I'm going to be doing a lot of traveling, and although the dog is psyched about a ten-day car ride to the west coast, the kitty would prefer to stay home with a nice vet student if possible. 🙂

You can see the craigslist ad here: http://blacksburg.craigslist.org/apa/2929767597.html.

I'll be leading at least one tour at open house, so please come say hi if you see me--my name's Karen and I have red hair.
