Hey guys,

Has anyone thought about where they are going to live in Blacksburg? So far I think I am looking for somewhere that has a gym within the complex. Do any current students have any insight into where are the best (and worst) places to live?

I'm living in Cedarfield. It's pretty small and quiet. It doesn't have it's own gym, but it is really close to campus so I will just use that gym (since we are already paying for it haha). Cedarfield is also really close to some beautiful and relatively unknown parks with great running/walking trails. But there are tons of housing options 🙂 you will definitely find something that is good for you.

Windsor Hills is pretty nice. Pet friendly with a decent gym and relatively close to campus.

I also lived in Foxridge for a couple years. A bit expensive, but also a nice area with lots of trails to walks dogs on. The "middle" of it can be a bit undergrad-y and noisy, but the apartments near the main streets are probably all right.

I may as well spill this now cus doubtless you'll get it from me at some point over the next few months.

If you're looking for an apartment complex, Windsor Hills is by far and away the best choice for veterinary students. It caters to graduates and young families, with "silence hours" (not really enforced, but they look good in print) and a no-party policy. This sounds stricter than it is; in practice what it means is you're getting a nice, quiet, fairly mature community. Perfect for those of us who spend an unfortunate number of Friday nights studying.

They have an incredibly lenient pet policies. Other places have breed restrictions and weight restrictions; WH has neither of those and the monthly pet fee is waived for veterinary students. They have an dog park on the premises, and while it's not the prettiest thing in the world it definitely gets its use. So far everyone I've met there has been really nice and and really good about who their dog gets along with and who they don't, so they know when to avoid the place if they need to. It's fantastic.

They've also got a 24 hour gym facility. You pay a $50 deposit for a key and you can get in there whenever you need to. So if you've been sitting with your face in the Path book for 8 hours and you really just really need to go for a run at 2am you can. (Hey, we've all been there.)

Finally, they're serviced by the Blacksburg Transit; there are 2 stops in WH so you're never too far from a bus stop. Prices are comparable, the apartments are nice, and there are a lot of us vet students here already, so you have a built-in support network if ever you need it. =)

-phew- That's my schpiel. Hopefully I'll only do it once this year. 😉

EDIT - Oh yeah, distance. I've walked home to WH from main campus as an undergrad; it was about a 25 minute hike but when the weather's nice it's worth it. Haven't tried it from the vet school, but it'll probably clock in closer to 35-40 minutes from there. It takes me about 15 minutes from my door to my seat in the lecture hall in the mornings, and if the light is in your favor it'll be even less.

Fantastic! Thank you for your advice. Do you know if there is a furnished option for WH? Thus far my favorite out of the complex I had looked at was Hethwood.

That I'm not sure. You can get a unit with a washer/dryer, but I don't know about fully furnished.

Congrats, btw - I knew you'd kick that interview's ass. 😉

Thank you! I really appreciate all of the advice you have given to me and other prevets over the past year. I still can't believe I am going to be a Hokie next year. I am the happiest girl in the world.

Just wait 'til the football season starts. :naughty:

I went to VT for my undergrad and lived in Windsor Hills for my last year. I had a golden and the place was great. Very dog friendly, very quiet as I don't party. I think only once or twice there were some drunk people that I could hear.
It is kind of more on the expensive end, but I do know that they get rid of the monthly pet fee if you are a vet student.
The biggest issue living there is that people let their dogs off leash and don't have control over them, so if you are walking, a random dog might just run up to you. There is a fenced in area, but that place gets really muddy after any kind of rain or snow and just stays that way.

My house will have an open spot come August 1st. We are pet-friendly and will accept another dog or cat, as well as a vet student, to join the family. The ad is up on CL and there is a picture featuring my Boxer in front of the house. We are off Main and Clay St, about 5-6 minutes away from the vet school.

They updated their pet policy this month so off-leashed dogs are no longer allowed in the community, for exactly this reason.

Finally. =)

Wow, that is a relief! I bet something happened that made them have to put that in place.

Actually now I'm looking at Terrace View apartments. The renovated apartments look SOOOO nice. The pool and fitness center look beautiful too.

I will tell you that Terrace View is a HUGE complex (I get lost in there) and I know they have a lot of parties. That is all I know about that place.

I live in Terrace View now as an undergrad, and next fall while in vet school I am definitely looking elsewhere! Terrace View is a place where a lot of parties do take place; so, make sure they can tell you exactly which part of Terrace View you will be living in. Some of the outer parts where only one or two units are rather quiet, but other than that, it can tend to be loud Thursday-Saturday evenings. The fitness center is very very nice though and the renovated apartments are gorgeous! Definitely just an apartment complex with a lot of partying undergrads so something to keep in mind when looking for a place while in vet school.

I'm a first-year that lives in Foxridge right now and I like it a lot. There's a Hethwood section where a lot of graduates live and they seem content with how quiet it is there. I live on the periphery of a lot the typical undergrad apartments and I honestly don't have any neighbor problems/noise problems during the week...but I guess that changes year-to-year. The people in the leasing office are always super friendly and maintenance almost always comes out the day you report something even in non-emergencies. It is on the pricier end, I pay about $432/month for my share of a 2-bedroom, but the quality of the apartment makes it worth it. The kitchen is really nice quality and huge and overall there's plenty of room in my place. I'm willing to pay a little extra a month to come from a long day of classes to it, ya know?

Also have a gym, pool, etc. But the great thing for saving money is the free gas heating. If you hate the cold as much as me and like keeping an apartment warm...you can do it in the winter as much as you want. My total electric bill this month was $36, so my share was $18. It's like magic, only better. The only other bill I pay is internet, since I don't find time for cable (Netflix is a different story ).

All that being said, I'm going to be looking for a roommate next year, 😀 so...if you're potentially interested, you can message me about it. I've got a kitten, so a pet deposit is already set-up, but the limitations aren't too bad cause I'm on the first floor. Also I'm a guy, but the sex of my roommate is irrelevant to me. So yeah, that's my Foxridge spiel.

Bleh, I am having quite a bit of trouble. Seems that rent has gone up a LOT since I last lived in Bburg....I remember when a 1 bedroom in Foxridge was only about 625/mo....

Anyone know of any place that would accept a dog (small/medium sized), cat, rabbit, AND snake? Even Windsor Hills seems to have a 2 pet maximum.....

Guess we may be stuck with craigslist :/

Looks super cool, but my pupper is not dog-friendly 🙁

We've found a few small houses thus far...a little on the high end of the price range, though. Grr I want my trailer back, haha.

Rocky Acres would let you have all your pets (lord knows I've got more than that!) It is a bit pricey, but another option to look at.

How ironic, I totally just emailed them yesterday! Do you live in one of their units? Pricey, yeah, a bit, but we can swing it on double income. They said my pets would be fine, so yay!

I really love their setup. Country living FTW.

Unfortunately, looks like I will be coordinating things with my brother (ugh) who lives in Bburg to check place out for me. I only have like 2 so far but trying to coordinate with him is.....let's just say frustrating. Like trying to herd cats :/ Maybe I could coordinate with any Bburg SDNers that have free time to take some piccies, hehe 😀
