Hey: I was wondering if anyone knows of medical schools that have voluntary deceleration programs e.g. where you take your first two academic years over three years. For various reasons, this is not well advertised. Anyone?

Many thanks...

I'd never heard of this, but from a quick Google it appears UNC, GWU, University of Minnesota, and UMDNJ offer such programs. UNC, for one, notes deceleration (whether voluntary or mandatory) in the Dean's letter when written for application to residencies.

Thanks for your reply. At least you agree its not an obvious question. I have done a Google search. In addition, I spoke to the author of this article:

From your list, I don't believe that GW has a voluntary program. but I believe that UNC is voluntary. UMDNJ has pretty harsh rules governing theirs. Not sure about U of M but not sure i would go there anyway.

Most schools would note any deceleration on a Dean's letter, but I don't want to be a dermatologist anyway.

Voluntary, but you have to be approved. Hmm.

Is this really worth $150k+ (lost future income) to anyone? I'd rather have confidence that with medical school as my only job, I could make it through the preclinical years successfully.

GTLO: Not if you were only doing it for the money. Could you do it if your mother were dying?
What about if you were finishing your PhD in Path?

Ask yourself, why would the med schools offer it if it wasn't useful?

To get more tuition from you? There are many things offered in med school (ex. bullcrap classes that are nothing but a waste of time) that aren't useful.

I did not start this thread to debate the merits. Please keep on topic.😡

Only because GTLO made (IMO) a ridiculous comment about money, as if it is the only reason that anyone in medicine does anything. No wonder healthcare is in the situation it is in. Thanks.

Excuse me?

I brought that up because it's important for anyone considering doing this to realize what it's going to cost them. Nowhere did I imply anything about the role of money in one's motivation to pursue medicine nor how it plays into one's medical career.
