OK im in my 2nd semester of freshman year now.

Anyway, last semester I SIMPLY DIDNT DO ANYTHING.

When should I start doing voluntary work for dentistry school? And what kind of things should I do? I was thinking of maybe working in the local dental clinic this summer...??

I hope they dont make me their custodian.

What did you guys do for volunteering and experience? Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Well Chiefsaab, there's a lot you can do when it comes to volunteering. I did a number of different activities, and they weren't all related to the dental field. Actually, the only dental related activity I did, was shadowing a number of different dentist. Everything else was more in lines of leading different reach out projects and events.

But I tell you one thing...start early. Don't leave it all for your junior/senior year. Working this summer at a clinic, it's a great start. 🙂 Also, if you're not sure what else to do, you can always contact your school's Volunteering Office (most univ. have these offices), they always have a list of different organizations where you may want to volunteer at. 😀 😀 😀

Best of luck.

I volunteered with a program that did after school college based exercises with grade school children. It was really cool, and really furthered my interest in dentistry as well as children. Find something you enjoy, and something you feel is worthwhile. Otherwise it will blow and you probably will not get much out of it.

Most volunteering work are fine, it can be community kitchen, dental clinic, middle way house and stuff like that. It is good as long as you can show that you are concerned about community welfare and like interactions with people. Also, is best to have volunteering experience on a continous bases. Good luck!

I've always enjoyed volunteering at elementary schools. It's always been a pleasure to see joy on kids' faces.

I've also volunteered once a week at food banks for 2 years. That is another humbling, and extremely beneficial personal experience.

Whatever you do, be committed to it. Since you have the luxury of CHOOSING what volunteer work you can do, choose something where you feel you will have the maximum impact and receive the most personal growth. Try to look beyond having a good application for dental school.

If you are good with computers, then volunteer to set up computers at a school. If sports is your thing, volunteer at a community center. The list goes on and on, and in reality, anyplace can use extra help!
