Hey

Im probably going to be forced to take a year. On a few waitlists. So i was thinking about doing a volunteer abroad program this august. Does anyone know of a good one?

thanks

Unless its DENTAL of HEALTH PROFESSIONS related, I would not bother. Like you said, you are on a few waitlistes, so I would think of what I need to do to make my application more competitive. Why not take a few grad-classes, dental assist, or study to possibly re-take DAT with that year off. 👍

I decided not to pursue my masters because I believe my gpa is good enough to get in somewhere. 3.6 overall and 3.6 science. Doing my masters would be just a waste of money. Maybe I will take a few courses in the spring if needed. Im retaking the dat in July too. I like volunteering and i think it would be an amazing experience. as for dental assisting, those jobs are really hard to find, i have had no luck at all.

Volunteering abroad was the most fun/rewarding thing I've ever done in my life, lol. I went to Mexico with a group from my uni this past Christmas and we built a house for a single mother of 4 there.

I don't know much about it, but aside from like, Habitat for Humanity or whatever, you can try this:

One of my friends is going with them to Thailand later this year or something crazy like that.

Good luck, and I definitely think you should do it (it will look good on your application and it's soo much fun)

http://www.gmtonline.org/, went with these guys to Costa Rica/Panama to provide dental care to people working in the plantain fields. Pretty good experience. 👍

Don't listen to those who tell you not to serve the underprivileged- they have obviously never been on one of these trips. It will be one of the most memorable experiences of your life and will change how you view the world. I think everyone should try such a trip- it makes for a great attitude adjustment. You won't be focusing inward as much and your compassion (great dental attribute) will grow. I went with this group: www.spreadingsmiles.org and it only cost $1600 for everything. I didn't pay a cent of that because local dentists wanted to support my trip and they payed the $1600. In addition I was required to participate in planning the trip and fulfilling responsibilities for the entire group. In fact I went back the same year and got dentists to pay for it again. Dentists were more supportive of my trip because they saw that I was part of the organization rather than just tagging along. They knew that nobody was going to pocket their contributions.

I went on a trip 2 summers ago and it was the most rewarding feeling ever! I felt so accomplished. over all a great experience and worth the money!!
