I will start volunteering/shadowing at an inpatient facility this winter break and it would be my first time. Honestly, I'm kinda nervous and excited at the same time. Any advice before I start?

There's no reason to be nervous. You'll just be wiping down stuff and sitting around doing nothing for most of the time. Just ask the PTs questions when they are not busy; that's how you learn.

It will be fine; volunteering is a very low-stress situation. So long as you're johnny (or jane) on the spot, they'll love you.

Use it as an opportunity to learn. You'll have direct access to PTs so ask them any questions about physical therapy, the day-to-day life of the clinic, any preparation they did prior to PT school, etc. Get to know them as they could be potential references. Be friendly and courteous to patients. This is an opportunity to develop your "bedside manner." And treat the PTAs, techs and transport staff like you would the PTs. Good luck and have fun!

Volunteering is fun! Just pay attention, have a good attitude, and do the best you can with whatever they tell you. And make sure to ask questions, it is all about learning if this is the profession for you!

Just relax. I hated the feeling of not knowing what exactly is going on. Just ask question. Don't worry, thats why your going to school so you can know whats going on.
