How is it that some of the people on here are able to claim thousands and thousands of hours of volunteer work!?!?! I know that during my 4 years of undergrad, it was A LOT of time to just get about the 800 that I did. On top of school, I don't see how it is possible to get that many thousands of hours!!! For some of you that DID, how did you get grades to back it up?

I agree, some people's numbers sound unrealistic... unless they are counting the hours over their entire life or something...

I think if you have ~100 hours, you're good to go!

I would rather focus on studying than volunteering.. Yes, I know volunteering can be enjoyable, but you can't forget about those grades!

1000 hours volunteering is practically equivalent to a part-time job.

im with you guys. it seems a little sketchy when on paper applicants are averaging 20 service hours/week , 15 hours/week observing, full-time student, pt jobs etc.

good I'm glad that people agree with me and I wasn't being unrealistic & thinking that some people's hours may be "a little sketchy"...I mean, I'd like to see someones week to week, hour by hour schedule if they've managed to do THOUSANDS of hours of volunteering/shadowing/workin in dental offices...

Why not? Some people work full time as a dental assistant/shadow during the summer. 8 hours a day, 24 days a month, 3 month summer break = roughly 600 hours. 2 or 3 summers and you can have 1800, not to mention any time you put in during the school year.

Yes, but I believe the OP is talking about people with 1000+ hours of volunteering in ADDITION to an unrelated part time job and school. I work part time and go to school full time. In order for me to complete 1000 hours of volunteering, I'd most likely have to sacrifice some study time.
