Ok, dumb question. I see everyone saying i did x amount of volunteer hours doing this and y hours doing that. Is there a specific place on AMCAS that you put how many hours you did or does this only come up in interviews? Thanks.

yes, you should write about your volunteer experiences in your AMCAS EC section.

Yes, you put it in your AMCAS application. There are options for hours/wk and total hours.

Be careful and truthful. Applicants have been rejected or had their acceptance rescinded for exaggeration and lying.

On your AMCAS do you enter in both hours/week and total hours? Or do you choose one of the options? For certain activities (ex. shadowing), it seems like only total hours really makes sense to enter.

The experience section of the AMCAS application actually asks dates for the activity (month/year to month/year) and hours per week. Okay, so this is totally inadequate if you shadowed a couple of people for 40 hours over a 2 year period. The best in those cases is to leave one field or the other blank and fill in the details in the free text field.

In terms of clinical volunteer stuff. The minimum we generally see is 2 hours per week for 3-4 mos or full-time for 1 week. I generally like to see at least a little more than the minimum. Ideally, someone has a couple of years of clinical exposure in a few different settings or increasing involvement in one setting.

How do you mean 'different settings'? Different departments in a certain hospital, or hospital volunteering and hospice, volunteering + shadowing, etc.

Different hospitals, or different departments within a hospital, or a hospital and a doctor's office or hospice or nursing home, or friendly visitor to the elderly, or a clinic, or a needle exchange, or.... you get the idea.

By "a couple of years in a few different settings", I mean a combination of different settings over a period of years.
