Hi Everyone,
I am a new premed but already have a BA degree, so I'll be finishing up my classes in about 2.5-3 years (part time plus taking extra upper level sciences). My big concern is, I just made the decision to go to medical school so I never volunteered or shadowed before, nor do I have a clinical job (I'm an analytical chemist). I've been thinking about applying to medical scribe jobs while I'm in school to get clinical experience, but is this really necessary? I like my current job, it's stable, good money and I don't want to leave, but I'm afraid that medical schools would frown upon me remaining a full time chemist which would basically destroy all of my chances of clinical experience. I could vol/shadow on weekends of course but how many hours should I aim for when I begin applying? and is clinical experience necessary for a non traditional applicant like myself?
I guess what I'm saying (and I know it sounds bad) I don't want to sacrifice the job position I worked very hard for. To elaborate, I don't have a chemistry degree. I worked very hard in a technician position for 4 years to get my chemist position and I'd hate to leave it until I know for sure that being a doctor is what I want. Would this be understandable?
** I should note that my cumulative GPA will be below a 3.4.
