I have some questions about volunteering and GPA

How important exactly is hospital volunteering? There has been a lot of drama recently between me and one of my local hospitals which ended up in me being released as a volunteer. Not that I have any concerns about it (I think it was more of a vendetta type of thing than anything actually serious); this basically implies that I will probably not have much hospital volunteering experience on my transcript. Have I stabbed myself yet?

And now for the GPA:

I saw some random GPA calculator on here that calculates it based on the AMCAS thing. My school has it's own GPA calculator. According to my school, my cume is a 3.7 and my science is a 3.6. According to the AMCAS thing, my cume is a 3.6 and my science is a 3.5. Which one will medical schools use to gauge me? T_T I thought I was doing well up to htis point...

this is what I think..

1. volunteering and clinical exposure is crucial (well...I will say more than necessary...much more)...either you can fix the problem with this hospital or find another one to volunteer if you want to get more experience...just curious, how long and how many hours do you have so far? if it's 50 or several months, you need to continue, if it's 500 or several years, I think you will be fine...

2. I am pretty sure it's the AMCAS GPA they use..

hope it helps...

Agree in theory. On point one, you need some exposure to healthcare. How much and exactly how you do it are up to you, but that's the point on which I very nearly got burned myself.

On two, they use AMCAS. The point of AMCAS GPA is that it's standard, it gives the adcoms a standard comparison without mixing in various institutional policies.

You were released as a volunteer?

What did you do? 😱

If they want let you volunteer at the hospital anymore you could try a free clinic if there is not another hospital in your area.

Long story short about what I did: I tried to volunteer is what I did. I called the office at 9:00AM every Monday to schedule myself to volunteer on Friday of the same week. I'd have to leave a message, I'd get called back and told that the entire was packed. I tolerated this for a few weeks but this most past week I snapped and began asking a lot of questions and poking my nose into the policies of the volunteer department. As I was ending the conversation, I asked when I could speak to the manager. The woman on the other end said "Three days from now is when she'll be back" to which I responded "Ok" and began drawing the phone away from my mouth to end the conversation. While I was doing that I said in frustration to myself "What the ****." I got a call today from the manager (she was lying her *** off the entire time... and didn't listen to a WORD I SAID telling me that she's letting me go. What a joke hospital.

Also... so basically I should not use my school GPA calculator because it won't give an actual indication as to where I am? So basically if I want to go to UPenn and my school GPA says I'm on the right path because I have a 3.7 so far, I'm actually not on the right path because my AMCAS GPA will actually be a 3.5? (Note this numbers may be lower or higher than what I say, the numbers I'm using now are just benchmarks)

So in other words... I'm ****ed?

Also for volunteering in a clinical setting: I was going to ask my family doctor if I could volunteer in his clinic (and I'm almost certain he'd say yes). Is this better or should I still try to get a hospital?
