Hello SDN,

I have a question concerning volunteering that has to do with the clinical portion of the application to med schools. Here is some background information before I ask. Currently, I'm working as an NREMT-B at a local hospital part-time. The hospital I work at has numerous clinical volunteer opportunities. Normally, the clinical consist of: BP checks, glucoscans, secondary vitals, and health management instruction. My question is, should I volunteer my time to partake in these clinicals when I'm already getting tons of clinical time in my average workday? I don't want to overkill my application with similar experiences. Also, would it be okay that I'm doing the volunteering through my workplace instead of EMS, or at another hospital?

Personal call, I would do it if you enjoy it. If you have other volunteering you enjoy doing, then it may help you stand out more.

Yes, you can list it separately too on the amcas to designate what is paid and what is volunteer.

If you feel you're getting good patient contact with your job, there's no need to add more of the same through volunteering. Of course, it's desirable to have some community service to list on your application so you look like a well-rounded applicant, but this could be for a cause you care about that has nothing to do with medicine: Humane Society, coaching a sport you love in a kids organization, Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics, homeless or womans shelter, after-school tutoring at a Middle School, etc.
