Hey guys,
So I haven't posted in forever... my life fell apart but I am finally back on the horse.
So my question is about volunteering ( I did a search but didn't really find anything).
Okay,
I am plan to start volunteering and although volunteering at a hospital is something that I must do (since everyone else does) I want to dedicate my time to an animal shelter. In my personal life I have rescued 2 dogs, trained them, and have tried my best to give them a loving home. Now I WANT to become a podiatrist and not a Vet. How will adcoms view me volunteering for the MSPCA?? Just wondering...
Thanks in advance... now I gotta head off to CHEM!!

Most schools look for candidates with diverse life experiences. The fact that you have worked with animals isn't something that will be frowned upon, but it seems like your activities outside of working with animals are very few. Why do you want to become a Podiatrist is what they will ask you? Just volunteering at a hospital simply because "everyone else does" so isn't convincing enough, shadow a Podiatrist!

Not trying to be condescending towards you and animals, I have two dogs and love horses; but on another note you're speaking animal language, evidenced by your word usage i.e "... I am finally back on the horse". If you really want to impress the adcoms you may want to change how you speak and write.

Veterinary medicine is bad ass, why are you leaving it for podiatry?

Come on who doesn't want to do a c-section on a dog? A litter of 8 pups?

👍

You pretty much do the c-section in your clinic also, lol.

I have to admit, I don't have much medical experience (shadowing or volunteering at a hospital) but animals, although a huge part of my life, are but a few of the things that I have accomplished.
When I said that everyone else volunteers at hospitals I didn't mean it as that's the only reason I am doing it, albeit its a bit annoying that it has become a med school pre-req. I just wanted to get an opinion as to what you guys think the adcoms will interpret my volunteering at the MSPCA instead of a hospital like everyone else.... I do want to become a podiatrist and treat humans.

Hehe,
I wish I could split myself in two and be able to dedicate my time to animals and also help out my fellow man through medicine...
However, right now I am just walking my path to what I believe my calling is... Who really knows where I'll end up... maybe opening someone foot or delivering 8 pups!! 🙂

The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals -- It will show the admissions committee that you my friend are compassionate and have a thing for animals.

Have you shadowed a podiatrist? Have you shadowed a vet?

Spend like a week shadowing both, full time. See which one you like better.
