volunteering with paramedics

anyone volunteered with paramedics/emts in ambulance? i'm curious if you have to actually do the emt course in order to ride with in an ambulance, or is there such thing as "shadowing" paramedics out in the field?

Generally students in the EMT-B class are given one ride along. Other than that I'm pretty sure you have to actually be working/volunteering in the system to be riding on the ambulance. In all honesty, unless you live in a really big city, shadowing a paramedic or riding on an ambulance once or twice isn't going to get you a lot of experience. In my county, a typical 12 hour shift would respond to 3-5 calls. The cool part about being an EMT is that you are actually allowed to touch patients and participate in treatment, rather than watching from the corner.
