Hi guys! :hello:

I'm sure many of you have seen me around, but I have a question for you all!

So as I've browsed the pre-dental forums these past couple years, I've noticed the same kinds of threads popping up, especially the "What Are My Chances" type of threads, and as December comes around, the "What should I pick: School 1 vs School 2" type of threads (much less so though). Also, sometimes the school specific discussions get mixed up, so it might be helpful to separate older threads from the current ones.

In the pre-med forum, they have dedicated sub-forums for these topics, and since the things that go on in the pre-dental forums are pretty similar to those in the pre-med forum, I think things could be a lot more streamlined if we were to organize our forum like the pre-med forum.

This is just an idea being tossed around, but I'd love to hear your thoughts. Do you guys think it would be nice to have our forum be a little more organized? Vote above, and discuss your comments/concerns/questions below!

tl;dr:
1) Add a "What are my chances" subforum
2) Add a "Current School Specific Discussions Forum" + Add a "Older School Specific Discussions Forum"
--> Maybe: Add a "Help me decide/what should I pick" subforum to decide between 2 acceptances/schools

Thank you

All of the above would be nice, maybe also forums for non traditional applicants and reapplicants too.
That's a really good idea! We could definitely implement a subforum for non-trads/career changers/reapplicants.

I really like the 3rd option. I found it really frustrating to narrow down my school list between two similar schools, and seeing old threads of students comparing the two were really helpful. It'd be nice to have a dedicated space for that stuff in the future.

All of the above, no doubt! Glad you are working so hard on making this forum better @artist2022

P.S. Maybe even an interview subforum, on all questions relating to that?
Hey that's a really good idea dude! I'm gunna definitely take these ideas up the chain 😀

and thank you hehe :happy::happy::happy:

I agree with subforms for options 2 and 3. I wouldn't put a subforum for chance me threads. It'll just cause people to spam their applications asking how likely it is they'll get in when really none of us truly know.

That's true, but I feel like that happens anyways- our forum (and the DAT Disc forum too) is basically flooded with chance me's. It may be better to just compile these into a single accessible place.

Yeah but a specific subforum for it will enable it even more lol. Chance me threads are common, but they’re not THAT common. Do you remember what happened when Feralis posted a chance me thread? About 100000 predents posted their applicants on there. That same thing will happen in the subforum.

Agreed. I wish chance me's weren't a thing simply because nobody really knows and all people who answer them do is recite google statistics. But they are a thing and it'd probably be nice to just open a subforum for them so that they don't flood pre-dent forums.

Exactly- they aren't going away any time soon and it might just be easier for them to just be in a single area. Also, in regards to people asking about certain schools, dental students from those schools may be better equipped to answer those questions and would be better able to find these questions if there's only a single place they can be (if that makes sense lol 😛)

I agree with all of them. + non-traditional thread, too. 🙂

Can you make one for international students too? not advanced standing international dentist, but foreign national applicants who are applying to regular 4 yr dental program. It was very hard to navigate useful information buried here (partly bc the search function here isn't the greatest).

I like the idea of chance me thread separated, so that it can be "cleaner" in the main thread.

Thanks for the efforts!

So I brought these ideas up the chain, and found out that although the nontraditional students forum is in the "Pre-Medical" Forums, it has always been considered to be for all preprofessional students, not just MD/DO. Here's the link: Nontraditional Students.

I think using this forum may work better than having our own subforum (there possibly may not be enough traffic to warrant a subforum, but we can always try this out with a thread first--> popular --> subforum). Same thing for international- we could try a thread out and see how that goes. Let me know what you guys think.

I have a different opinion as a user.

Most of people come here as "new" and often have no clue that the "nontraditional" subform under "pre-med" is for all fields, not just true pre-med. (I didn't know until now). Medical school and Dental school applications are very different--obviously we do have separate forums of those for regular applicants--then what is the reasoning of combining all fields into one forum for non trad? other than the traffic will be slow?

I as a non-trad, rather have small, meaningful threads in one place, than lager all mixed up threads in one place. Because all other stuff is junk anyway. (and again the search function of this web isn't the greatest...)

Same goes to international applicant who are applying to 4 yr regular program, not those advanced standing foreign trained dentists who are entering US from abroad. It is extremely hard to find/sort out any relevant information via search function here...
Even if there will be only handful threads in that sub-forum, that will be very useful and meaningful 🙂
I understand the both will have small # of people who will be interested in those sub-forums, so if people are against making a sub-forum for those, maybe, we can have some other easy alternative. like... is there anyway we can have a header functions? like if we choose "non-trad" option while writing a thread, [non-trad] shows up in the title, same goes to [international], or even [OOS] for oos related questions...
That way all those threads show up in the main page, but when people want, people can just filter the header to view only relevant informations.... that way we don't have to make multiple boards for some small groups...?

It's just my thoughts. I am not sure if that is technically possible on this web page.

I like the idea you said, thanks for the thought!

Previously there was a stickied “chance me” thread which worked quite well. I think that would be a better option than sticking those threads where they will be subject to less traffic. I don’t think this place has enough users to fragment to the suggested level.

In regards to option #1, a WAMC subforum has been made! View it here: What Are My Chances?

In regards to option #2, I created this thread so that the older discussions are easily accessible: Compilation - Index of School Specific Threads (2018-2022)

In regards to a chance me thread vs subforum, I believe having them in a subforum will allow people to search through them easier than if they were in a thread; we are also trying to reduce the number of stickies so that they don't take over the forum.

The idea with the different prefixes for nontrad/international/career changers could possibly work better than a subforum though.
