Hi folks:
To be an American citizen in the 21st century means that every day we grapple with problems the likes of which our forefathers could never have imagined. We are beset by the threat of terrorism, the collapse of Things As We Knew It, war, and massive economic problems. Weighty problems, certainly, but not intractable ones.
Today is Election Day, and I urge all of you to go out to the polls and vote. Many patriots(some of whom you know, others unknown) have shed their blood, given their lives, and sacrificed comfort so that each and everyone of us has the ability to freely participate in our democracy. I implore you to participate today, because if you don't then ultimately all of their sacrifices were in vain.
Let me finally appeal to a more concrete reality. All of us, whether current or future health care providers, have a critical stake in participating in the electoral process. Health care as a portion of the national economy has skyrocketed: from 5.1 percent to 15.4 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) between 1960 and 2004. That means YOUR voice is needed.
This day only comes every two years (and four for the presidential race). Make sure that when the new year dawns, you can say that you helped elect or defeat those in power. Participate and help our country fix the problems. Let our lives and the lives of our children be lived in peace during the years to come.
Peace.
