Hey guys,

I'm debating whether I should subscribe to

1. The New Yorker
2. Economist

I am subscribing to this mainly to help me with my MCAT VR. I have subscribed to the Economist before, but I found most of the articles were dealing with the economy (hence the Economist) and I think the New Yorker has more variety, especially humanities.

is this true?

Thanks!

Judging by your SDN handle I'd have to go with SLAM.

i like the economist better but this is totally not necessary for the mcat

I have subscribed to both, and I definitely wound up liking The Economist more. I know this may sound obvious, but if you aren't in New York, you can still enjoy The New Yorker, but some sections are definitely more applicable if you live in New York City.

Both if you can, very good reads IMO, it definitely helped out my VR score.

I'm more of a NY Times guy, it has some great reads in the Opinion section.

I don't think subscribing to either for the sole purpose of/mainly MCAT verbal is necessary. You can find either at your school/local library for free.

The economist is good in that it will give you a good perspective on domestic and international politics.

If you're looking for more "MCAT-style" passages though, I think you need to read the New Yorker. The New Yorker covers a lot more topics than politics/economics, including social commentary and literary/art criticism, which is an important component of the VR section (and usually the area we pre-meds need practice on). I also think the articles are written at a level comparable to MCAT VR passages.

The New Yorker is free online I believe.
