Hello
My question is if you have "w" , "D", or "F" on your transcript, do you have no chance of getting into the Dental school?
Any input would be greatly appreciated
Thank you

I don't believe so at all. Plenty of legit reasons for a W, D, or F. I was told a C is a bruise on your transcript, a D is an open wound, etc., by Brian Trecek at Marquette, but I'm sure plenty of people have gotten in with bad grades in a few classes. It's all a matter of the rest of your transcript & application balancing it out. I don't think an F and a W your freshman year are going to keep you out anywhere if the next three years look good.

Forgot to mention: it might keep you out if it's in a Dental School pre-requisite course!

Overcome your deficiet, retake the course if must- and undoubtly, excell. You'll have to make the rest of your application stand out.

It depends on what course it's in. If it's in an elective it might not harm you as much as if it was in a core science course. A W is not too bad if it's one or two, sometimes you have to drop a course and you do it after the deadline.

A "W" is bad, but it can be overcome with a good overall GPA and a solid reason for the W. However an F is a very bad black mark on your transcripts and will be very very difficult to overcome. You need to have a very solid explanation for a school to accept an F.

How can you equate a W with an F? Im sure MANY people get into to school with a W. An F may be harder but if its in one class and like others said it was in your first year and you show big turn around and have a complete package it can be over looked

I have about 10 F's... 5 W's on my transcript.

10 F's?! Yep, it's cheaper for me to "go" to school (discount due to employ) and stay on my parents health insurance than to drop out and get some shoddy plan on my own.

Obviously, this has killed my GPA, but meh, what can you do.

Also, W...F. Basically they are the same. One doesn't calculate into your GPA, but it may as well be an F. An F tells someone looking that you did not attend class/did not do any of the work/etc. What does a W say - Oh, I don't feel like doing the work/attend class/something came up/blah... Pretty similar.

Solid 4 Semester turn around (3.7+) and a decent DAT (19-20), you're good. At least, that's what I am going for.

I have two classes with "W" and two classes with "D" in my freshmen year....🙁
Retook all of them and got A's.
Hopefully adcoms will overlook those bad grades in my freshmen year..

I have 2 classes with F (5 units) 1 class with NP (4 units) and 1 class with W (3 units) I got 9 interviews so far 🙂

*update
12 interview invites
attended 10
accepted 8

10 F's? did you get any interviews?

With 10 F's it will be damn near impossible to get your GPA over 3. Good luck.

I made an F in Organic II but made As in Organic I and GenChem I and II. I interviewed didn't get in after undergrad and had to get a Master's but an F can certainly be overcome. Also had a couple of Ws, even had one in grad school.

My first three grades on my undergrad transcript are Ws, the rest thereafter are As. I am 100% sure those Ws will not make any difference for me. I do not want to study at a school that will even remotely consider those Ws in weighing my candidacy!

W's, F's and D's can definitely be overcome, but the classes they were in do play a part. I have 3 F's and 2 D's on my transcript that I never re-took, and this year so far I have had 5 interviews and 2 acceptances. The key is to constantly be improving your application, and to not have those classes be anything involved in the sciences or your major. If you can explain them and show you have what it takes to overcome and succeed, then you will be fine. If you don't get in, don't be discouraged and keep working hard. I'm proof it can happen. Good luck!

Sounds similar to my situation.. what schools did you get interviews at?! And good luck!!

Not always. I have a W on my transcript. I worked my ass off and had a C in that class. That's why I dropped it. I was tired of working so hard and not seeing results, especially when my other class grades suffered. And I hate to make excuses, but the testing style really killed me. I was bad at taking the kind of tests they gave. I'd rather have a higher GPA and get a chance to explain my W than to have a C bring down my GPA and make me look less competitive.

Unfortunately, my W came in a science class that is recommended by a lot of schools. I'll probably have to re-take it and get an A.

Assuming you have retaken the courses and done well, schools are more sympathetic and forgiving than you might expect.

I had a W on physics. its fine. jus get an A next time. one school asked about it and i got accepted to that school so I don't think it really mattered. And it was the only W on my transcript. All other grades were As and Bs.

I got a C, D, F, AND a W... I never retook a single course. The C was in O-Chem lecture. The D was in O-Chem lab. The F was in Human anatomy. The W was in Bioscientific vocabulary.

I got into Penn, Pacific, Tufts, NYU, Creighton, and Nova... I wrote a heck of personal statement and explained myself like crazy on the interviews, but it's possible.

Don't lose hope.

Though, you SHOULD try to retake courses... that shows you care (I probably should have in retrospect). Also, I think it also probably helped that I scored a 21 on my O-Chem subject test on the DAT... showed that I improved🙂

I have 1 F, 1 NP, 1 W, 3 Ds, 12 C-s, 9 Cs, and 6 C+s. So......If anyone else out there can beat that lemme know. If I make it into dental school this round its gonna be a long shot against all odds.

The rule of Adcoms:

W's, we cool wit youz
F's and D's, get on yo knees!

I think the Get on your knees part belongs in the gunner thread lol:laugh:. Although they arent getting F's and D's they definitely will get on their knees lol.

thank goodness for this thread... people who have w/d/f's and got into dental school... what other activities were you involved in??

I totally second that. I was seriously on my knees at most of my interviews. I could clearly tell that some of the more "conservative" adcoms that believe that O-Chem is best indicator of academic performance clearly weren't impressed with my poor performance in the course. This was reflected by my less-than-enthusiastic reception by a number of skeptical interviewers. I'm fairly sure that many interviews flunked my immediately upon hearing/seeing this result.

A "C" and a "D" in O-Chem lec and lab is definitely not something that's easy to glance over. Neither is an "F" in Human Anat. Though, the F was actually easier to explain for various situational reasons.

I think a year or more of "A" in similar-difficultly courses is a good way to redeem yourself though. Also, I think it's important to cite that you now know how to study and/or have made the adjustments to your life to allow for continued performance at a high level.

Then there is me, nothing below a straight B (no B-) and I have 2 acceptances, NYU and Indiana, no where near where some of the posts above....

Give it some time. your stats are good plus you have a 100% interview rate!

I came to realize after meeting with several admision directors, that GPA means **** if you dont have a DAT over 19, GPA only matters if you are under 3.2 or so, if you are 4.0 student and a DAT under 18, you chances are slim, look at me a 3.6 student and 19/17/15 and got no love at all from denal schools, and my friend 3.3 20/19 dat is in. This is really not fare of a game. Rock the DAT and your in.

6 F's (16 credits, including 8 credits of the same chem class I failed twice but later got an A- in)
1 D- (2 credits, biology course)
1 D+ (2 credits, another bio course),
1 C- (3 credits)
3 C's (8 credits, including molecular bio)
1 W (3 credits, Freshman English)

I dunno, I may you beat on the bottom end but you got more in the C range. And those grades were all from my 2 Freshman semesters, but I repeated all of the D's and F's. I'm averaging a 3.6 for the 5 semesters since then and my GPA (counting those beauties above) is still stuck right at 2.79. Those F's absolutely murder GPA's. If I get in next cycle, that'll be a freakin' miracle. Oh and I'll take a W over and F any day.

Gbio: B+, C+, C
GbioLab: A, B, B

GC: B-, C+, C
GCLab: B-, C+, C+

Orgo: B, B-, C+
OrgoLAB🙁no lab first quarter), A, B

PHYSX: A
Lab: B

lots of C's i feel depressed about my grades and still am no where near as bad as some posts above!

i like how we're all sort of bragging about low grades! hahahaa

GL to all of you!👍

Yea those Cs were in 5 years of engineering so my science and physics grades are horrendous. Since then I've spent another 5 years trying to bring my grade up so combined my score comes out to just about 3.0. I think I kicked it over this quarter from 2.99. Lets see who's smiling on us and will give us a chance.

Word, let's hope admissions is all about upward trends 😎
