I've heard of stories of people getting accepted off of the wait list a week before orientation. This throws a huge wrench into things if you are trying to get HPSP. Although this hasn't happened to me (at leat not yet) I might just go to the next cycle.

Is this possible by the various military branches? (going over to the next year that is)

It used to be that if you didn't get the 4 year HPSP then you could get a 3.5 or a 3 year the next cycle...not sure if this happens anymore though since so many people are now applying for it.

The trend the last few yeas in the Army has been that if you don't get the 4 yr scholarship you are offered first dibs for the 3 yr scholarships. Don't plan on a 3.5 yr scholarship.

Really? Why can't you compete for a 4 year in the next cycle? If you got selected for a 4 year this cycle, but just didnt' get an accept letter in time before the scholarships ran out you are automatically out of the running for another 4 years scholarship in the next application cycle?

You can't have a completed application until you have a letter of acceptance from a dental school. Therefore your packet won't be accepted.

4 yr scholarships are reserved for individuals who haven't started school yet. Once you start school if you don't have the scholarship, the first year is on you. You can apply for 1 yr loan repayment (currently $40k/yr) to help take your loans down a bit. Thus if you are wait listed and not given a scholarship out of the pool of scholarships available for this year then you can receive a 3 yr HPSP with a 3 yr payback that will begin D2.

In past years they have sometimes tried to dig up money to make it a 3.5 yr scholarship (you would owe 4 yrs), but I do not see that occurring in the future any more. You can take the 3 yr scholarship plus $20k sign on bonus (but you will owe 4 yrs) - I wouldn't.
