So, as we all know there are no more scholarships left for this academic year, but I had applied and I was just told a few days ago that I was selected. The only problem is the scholarship money will be available in October for the next fiscal year. My question is do you guys think if you sign the 4 year scholarship now and take a loan for your first semester that the Army could potentially reimburse you or not?
My guess is not and the recruiter said he is not sure and they had asked but no response yet.
I just want to get some feedback from SDNers as you guys seem to be very knowledgeable. Thanks in advance.

My experience is for the Navy, so yours might vary, but I think they are all the same when it comes to stuff like this. They will pay the tuition as long as you swear in before the end of the semester.

However, you need to be careful because I don't think that they will REIMBURSE you if you pay it yourself. I was told that you need to let the school know that you won't be paying because of the scholarship, but that the military will pay any associated late fees. They made it very clear that I should not pay the tuition because they could only pay the school, not the student.

This info is from back in 2007 so things might be different, but that was my experience back then.

Here is my 2 cents in regards to what Jfitzpat said.

Unless you have signed the paperwork for the scholarship, I do not believe the school will allow you to not pay for the tuition until October since it is not guarateed you will be taking the scholarship. You can back out any time from now until you sign the paperwork. What I would suggest you do is go talk to the financial aid office at the school you will be attending. They will have someone who deals with the Health Professions scholarships. They will know how their school handles situatios like yours.

Regarding the military paying the school, not you when it comes to tuition... well, the military can still pay the school, then the school reimburses you for the tuition you paid. I have had to be reimbursed by the school for things before.

My suggestion - talk to the people who deal with this yearly - the financial aid folks at your school. If they are not helpful, then go send a PM to NavyFP. He will know how to handle your situation.

I would not count on this. CDR McLean told me (when I was in this same situation) that if the tuiton was paid by me or through loans, I was SOL for that semester. He said nothing about paying it and then getting reimbursement back from the school and I would not risk it when you are talking about something as huge as a tuition payment.

I had not sworn in when school started, but I had the school base my financial aid on the assumption that I was going to be on HPSP. They had no problem doing this (your school might vary). The Navy didn't get around to paying my tuition until late October/ early November and it wasn't a problem.

As I said above, I was in this EXACT situation, so I'm not just making this stuff up.

Thanks guys. I will check with the school first thing in the morning.

I spoke with the HPSP office which is down the hall from me. 2 seperate things to realize with money for HPSP. For the Army:

We have no one wait-listed pending available funds for 4 yr scholarships. We do have people as alternates in case someone that accepted declines the scholarship.

The HPSP stipend is received at the later date of when you 1) Take the Oath 2) Start classes 3) Date of contract signing. So if you were accepted in February and you swore swore in and signed your paperwork. If your classes start in July - you will be paid beginning in July. If you were accepted in August, swore in and signed your paperwork then, but your classes started in July - You will get paid commencing on whatever date you swore in and signed paperwork in August.

Tuition is paid for whatever semester you are currently in when you sign. If your fist semester has already begun and you join midway through, or even at the end of the semester in December - the Army will go back and pay for that semester of school (tution and expenses - not stipend). If you wait until January when the 2nd semester starts - you will only have that semester paid for and the first semester will be on your own.

Interesting. I will definitely check with my recruiter again, because what he told me is slightly different from what you have here. I appreciate your timely response, and I will post the response tomorrow.

I just got notice today that I am on the OML for the HPSP with the army. Do you know what my chances are now? And is there a OML/waitlist with the Navy as well?
