i m in USA since last 3 yrs. took my nbde 1. got 85%. toefl is 99. nd gpa is 3.2. I have applied to schools this year. What do u think shd i do? Retake part 1 or take part 2. Also, because i am in a joint family and inlaws it was not possible for me to give some time to observership or assisting. Now i m not too sure whether the schools will accept me or what next step shd i take. these things are killing me. I just am not able to decide over anything. And everyone is making me crazy by asking what hapened, what are u going to do next, still do u want to do dentistry? please friends, atleast give some suggestions, it would really help me a lot and make me feel better. i m just tired of relatives and friends and their stupid suggestions.

Your stats are decent. Although TOEFL over 100 would have been better. But don't sweat it for now. 🙂
Consider taking part 2.

Some of suggestions-
i) Assuming you don't have kids:
- Can you spare some hours a week to observe/ shadow? It doesn't have to be an entire work week- just 2-3 days or so. This will make a LOT of difference to your application, IMO.

ii) Assuming you do have kids:
`- can your in laws watch for for a few hours during the day?
-or can you get someone to watch them for a few hours every week?
With kids taken care of study/ observe as you need to.

The older we get the more responsibilities we have to shoulder. Spouse, kid(s), in laws, parents, siblings, chopping, cooking, cleaning, dusting, laundry, dishes, making endless cup of chai and coffee, picking up after everybody....phew! That's enough make anyone choke. If that's not enough gotta schedule exercise, prayers/ meditation (if you are believing kind), annual physical, dental check ups. To top all that one has to answer nosy relatives/ random people/ acquaintences about career, "when are you giving us some good news?"= so when will you have kids? questions. AAARRRRRRGGGGGGG!!!!!!😡😀

Right?

My recommendation to you is please put yourself on your list of priorities. You are, in a way, doing all this for the sake of your family also. Do take time somewhere between breakfast and lunch and lunch and dinner to do what you need to. Where ever you can, ask for help. You dont have to be a superwoman right now. You are not alone and we are here to (at the very least) give you a shoulder to cry on.

( I think you are woman because to the tone of writing. Hope I am right. Sorry😳 if not.)

GOOD LUCK:luck::xf:😍

Hi La fea,

Oh my God!!!! You made me laugh!!! This is exactly what happens with most moms taking exams. i am trying hard to dust off sometime for myself.... Anybody who asks me about good news or numerous irrelevant questions ... i say its time for me first...
I think once you start to try atleast... things fall in place. May it be time to study or exercise or work...

This was too good....

Well said LA Fea!!!

Hi Chillpill
many of us here are in the same boat. i know it is very disturbing with people asking a whole lot of questions. be determined in what you want to do, otherwise the frustration will be double. I am also living with inlaws and i have gone through the same kind of questions that you are. It is depressing when you are working so hard and people are questioning you instead of supporting.
Dental Exams are said to be one of the toughest exams in united states. I had to retake part 1 and i finally got admission this time in uop.
Believe me , it is a very big relief. You have got a decent score . i think you should keep aside the questions and concentrate on your part2 . we cannot change people. but we can make our life better with our abilities. and in the back of our mind we know that we can do it. Gather your strength again and focus on your future.

I have been in the US since Nov 2004, I live in a joint family as well. My stats are Part I 87, Part II 77, TOEFL 99 and GPA 2.83. I also have a FL DH license and did assistant work at dental offices for 2.5 years. Getting into dental school is very long process, just be persistent and apply to as many schools as possible. I applied for 3 cycles before I got into a program.

For your application I would say write a good sop, definitely get some observship or assistant work and add part II if you have not take it. Just hang in there, once you get into a dental school there are many more challenges that come your way 🙂

Finally, here is something that my husband always says:
Life is what happens when you are planning something 🙂

And one more from the movie kung fu panda:
"Past is History, Future is a Mystery, Today is a gift, that is why they call it the present"

Good Luck & God Bless

Hey chillpill,
I have been here in USA since 2003 and had applied for 3 cycles before I got into UIC this year. My stats are 86/80 ,toefl 112 and GPA 2.75..SEE the last part..that really broke my heart. Lafea and dentalbug are v.right.. TENACITY and PERSISTENCE definitely pay off🙂
What boosted my resume a bit was,,,I worked as an assistant for 1 yr and a research tech for 1 yr. So here are my few suggestion>
1. If you are not on a work permit,,it's ok,,just visit or talk to as many dentists and volunteer as an assistant,,or atleast an observer.
2. If there are any medical or dental colleges around..ask around all departments to volunteer with them. I started out like that and then the prof hired me after 6 months. Research exp. of any kind is a definite plus.

So,,don't lose HOPE!! Whenever you feel down, always remember that you CAN DO it !! Just hang in there and take up ur part-2 in the meantime.
Good Luck👍

Hi Chillpilli

I understand your situation. Some people get the admission at the scores you have while some dont. There are 50/50 chances.

Take Part 2 to strengthen your application.
