waiting it out for #1

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I unless your stats are really low. I would not apply to all DO schools.

I would only apply to the ones you would consider. Them being 5 or 7 or 10 schools.

1) Apply early
2) Make sure you meet their stats and requirements
3) Make sure your LOR are great.
4) Make sure they know you want them as number 1. Not by telling them that. But provide examples why. etc...

...how many of you would hold out for a year if you didn’t get into the school you wanted even if you got in somewhere else?
I wouldn't.

What's your number one, Picard? (sorry about the Star Trek reference) 😉

In the end you are going to get the same education. I wouldn't hold out unless it was for family reasons.
Ditto... only family reasons would hold me back.

I wouldn't recommend applying to schools you really don't intend on attending. It's a huge waste of money. If you're willing to actually attend a couple of different "back up" schools then apply to those (and don't wait that year to reapply to your #1 school). Or just apply to the school you want. If you're willing to wait another year (assuming you don't get in) to reapply, then why waste your money on all those other schools?

It is a REALLY bad idea to apply to schools that you wouldn't attend, even if it was the only school you were accepted to. The reason is that, in the following year, when you apply again, those schools that accepted you (but which you rejected) will not accept you again unless you had extraordinary circumstances for rejecting them the first time. Furthermore, other osteo schools will see that you got in the first year but chose not to go (if you got into other osteo schools-at least that's the way it works for allo schools), making them wonder why you didn't go and how committed you really are to medicine. It's simply a bad idea.

A better way is to apply only to the school in which you are interested for the first year. Then, if you don't get in, apply again the second year, in addition to other schools. I bet that once you don't get in the first time, you will be a little more willing to attend a "not first choice" school but a good school nonetheless. And those schools might give you a look since that would be the first time they received an application from you and you wouldn't have rejected them in the past.

Good luck.

Apply to a couple you would be willing to go to. Not everyone gets in to their #1 choice. Med schools(both allo and osteo) are getting more and more competitive these days. IMO, it's too risky to pass up an acceptance just for the chance to try again next year.
