I know most people are going to say it varies by program but how long does it usually take for schools to meet and then let you know your status after interviewing?

I interviewed on Monday and I know the school I was at had interviews a few weeks ago also. I also know that my PI is out of town today through Monday. I haven't heard anything- do you think that's a bad sign or just that maybe the faculty just haven't met yet?

With Monday being a holiday I thought they may meet this week. Which of course they might have and I just did not get an offer.

I dont think anyone is going to be able to give you an estimate because it's so variable. Did you ask the program when you should expect to hear back? I interviewed the last weekend in January and was told I would hear back late February/early March, so I wouldn't freak out- it hasn't even been a week.....

This place needs a distress tolerance thread. Also, some perspective on how things actually work in some of these programs. Finding a meeting time for multiple faculty is like herding cats. Take a deep breath, relax, and live your life normally for the next few weeks.

I know most programs I've heard from try to do it quickly to keep impressions fresh but when they can pull that off varies. Normally a week or two after interviews complete. They sometimes have folks coming in later for makeup interviews that push back the time table further or multiple sets of interviews scheduled on purpose.

Also some programs need formal approval from graduate school after they've met so that can add on a bit of time.

It varies a lot but most programs are trying to move quickly. There are a lot of factors even beyond schedules that can be at play though.

Seriously, especially since training in this field involves an inordinate (IMO, anyway) time of waiting to hear back about positions, pretty much year after year. It's something you just have to get used to.

Like people have said, a lot of times people know who they want to invite but the meetings can take 2-3 weeks. Then it can be even longer if say the PI is considering taking 2 students and needs to get that approved, waiting to hear about funding, their first offered person might decline...It's still really early on in the process so try not to worry!

Be thankful you didn't receive an email indicating "admissions decisions [will be sent] shortly" and still haven't heard anything. Not only is that a special kind of waiting hell, but you can't even rationally make sense of what the purpose of that email was (and therefore have no rational basis for subsequent thoughts), so it's just plain crazy-making. It's like someone scaring the crap out of you by yelling "WARNING!!!" and that's it--you have to figure out the rest.
