Anybody else read the first sentence and totally think your in? The two I've had so far started something like...Congratulations! We are pleased to inform you....or, On behalf of X University, it is my pleasure to inform you of your selection as an alternate.

The letters play with my emotions I tell ya. I go from wanting to go out drinking to, well,....wanting to go out drinking.

Hehe, I completely expected a rejection from UCSD so I first read it, I thought it said:
I am pleased to say that we decided not to accept you.
But it actually said:
I am pleased to inform you that you have been placed on the alternate list. I know this is not the letter you had been hoping to receive but...

I knew I didn't get accepted at UCSD because I didn't receive an acceptance email. However, I did get an acceptance from U Maryland that sounded exactly like a rejection. Look at this:
Thank you for your interest in the University of Maryland and your recent interview. In a highly competitive applicant pool, [AdCom was impressed with you. Welcome to Class of 2010].
I paraphrased the stuff in parenthesis. I thought I would get in UMB because my interview went really well so I was expecting it to start with "Congrats" or "I am pleased"... not "Thank you for your interest in our program."

I know huh.. when they start with "thank you... highly competitive application pool..." its usually not a good indication. I guess in your case, they wanna first thank you and tell you how competitive they are..

hehe... how interesting.
