Just curious, but does anyone know how waitlists work? Is there a true order of applicants on it? Or do adcoms just reevaluate the waitlist pool according to their needs?

I was under the impression that most re-evaluate the waitlist pool according to needs (some say they actually do go in temporal order on the waitlist); many schools accept post-dec interviewees before they touch the waitlist.
I was told at my Columbia interview that they re-evaluate the waitlist pool and select people depending on what types of candidates have already accepted Columbia's offer in December. Not sure how it is at the other schools though
