waitlist question

I know this question is way in advance since I'm applying for 2002 but I am curious about something...


What happens if they call you to offer you an admissions spot off the waitlist and you are not there to answer the phone? Do they just call the next person or will they wait for me to call them back? I know all med schools are different but what does the typical med school do?

I realize that might sound paranoid but better safe than sorry.

Here's my situation. I'm living back at home this summer, and my mom got a call from the admissions office when I was at work. My mom eventually got me the message, and I called their office back ASAP. I assume if no one had been home, they would have left a message on the answering machine. But the admissions office does stress that you leave a number where someone could get ahold of you fairly easily. But I don't know what the time limit is.

I think they usually give you 24-48 hours to return the call. All through the process, you are constantly reminded to update your contact information, and the schools also suggest that if you are going to be away or traveling for any period of time, to leave a number where a trustworthy family member or friend can handle it for you. If you are planning on traveling at any point, and being very unreachable, discuss things with family or friends, and empower someone to act on your behalf. As long as you remember to plan ahead, it shouldn't be a problem.

I was in this situation when I left to tour europe 3 weeks ago. I left the medical school my personal line w/a message machine and also my cell phone that I left at home that has voice mail. Low and behold the dean of admissions ended up leaving a message on my personal line AND cell phone last Monday. By luck, I caught the message Tuesday when I checked my personal line remotely and promptly called them back. Coincidently, my fall back plan worked. My mother saw a new message on my answering machine and also called back. I believe if they can't get a hold of you, they will give your spot to someone else who they can reach as some schools start early like mine. The dean of admissions emphasized how long the waitlist was and how imperative it was to contact each candidate in time.
