I was recently waitlisted at NYU. My interview went great so I'm really confused. I have a 3.72 GPA, 3.6ish Science GPA and 21 DAT. I also have many good extracirricular experiences including shadowing of all dental specialties, working with disabled children, TA in various courses, and even research at one of the top neuroscience labs in the country.

So im not quite sure why I was waitlisted.

I had a great impression of NYU after the interview and I really wanted to go there because Its right at home. It was my top choice along with Stony Brook which I have not heard from yet. I see lots of people getting into NYU with lower stats than me. I also had an amazing interview. Am I just unlucky??

What should I do? Should I write a letter of intent?

Write to Dr. Mejia. She's told numerous people that if you're interested to let her know and she'll see what she can do. I loved NYU and a 4th year said they wrote to Dr. Mejia and got in so I also wrote to her and got in. I'm not saying it's 100%, but it's worth a shot! A lot of people decide to not go to NYU because of the price so hopefully the waitlist will move fast...hope to see you there, good luck!

This process does seem like a crapshoot. I really wish you luck. I haven't heard back from stony either!

At least you got an interview. I also have slightly above NYU stats...and nothing. Ah well, the process is a crapshoot...

Maybe the others had a better interview and were more humble? Your attitude seems self deserving. Wait it out. Those who are accepted to NYU and their state school will start to decline NYU. NYU is no longer a shoe-in school.

How you got self deserving from that post is beyond me.

I remember reading somewhere that you are usually waitlisted if you don't have 100 hours of shadowing since that is what NYU requires. I'm not sure if that's true or if that applies to you.

Hi Keb2011,
Are you talking about writing a letter of interest or just a general update on the application?

I just wrote an email to Dr. Mejia thanking her for the experience and expressing my strong interest in the program. I wasn't just doing it to get a seat...while many people only see NYU's price tag, I absolutely fell in love with the school and Dr. Mejia said to tell her that in an email or letter. I went with email because who knows what can happen to a random letter in an admissions office haha.

Thanks for the input guys. I plan on writing a letter of intent to express my interest in the school. I also want to include my updated volunteer experience in periodontics.

Maybe this is it. I only had around 80 hrs of volunteer experience. I plan on getting more over the winter with my general dentist.

A lot of schools want the shadowing from a general dentist. Or have the minimum 30 (or what ever it is thesedays) from general. Also, referring to specialties isn't the best advice, since you're not even accepted to a dental school. I agree with Dr Toofache, don't burn your waitlist bridges yet. They're probably getting oodles of emails/letters. Patients is a virtue

Dont give up! ...🙂... Your chances are better than mine since i haven't even got interview yet!! Good luck from your hygienist...by any chance anyone have Dr. Mejia's email address?

I think if you are waitlisted you have a high chance of getting in. This Friday is the last chance to submit deposits for the ones who got accepted on Dec 1st(like myself). I got an email indicating this yesterday and I am declining NYU acceptance, so there would be some open places by monday! good luck
