Which is better at this point. Having been told that one has been on a waitlist OR just not hearing from schools (CA specifically).

Anyone with experience in this area, could calm my nerves.
Should one also call the schools to show interest? Hmm....

i think that you could argue both ways.

1. it is better to have not heard than being on a waitlist. how?
well, i am on IU's waitlist and just saw someone who interviewed there late DEC and then got accepted. so, as long as you get an interview (soon) then it maybe better to be waiting to hear something rather than being on the waitlist.

2. its better to be on the waitlist than having not heard anything. how?
if you are on a waitlist, you still have a chance. if you don't hear anything, chances are you will be rejected since the schools may fill their classes up.

what is all this mean?

simply means you won't know anything for sure unless you get that acceptance or rejection in WRITING!

However, you also specified that CA specifically is what you are concerned with...as for not hearing from Cali schools yet..your okay because they always take a while and have not nearly filled their class as other schools out of state have pretty much done so.
