What's the most common answer? Is there any inherent advantage/disadvantage to either option, besides being marked CONFIDENTIAL or NON-CONFIDENTIAL?

Most schools will not accept LoRs that students have access to. If they do accept them, they tend to look down on the letter. It's the school's way to make sure that applicants are not screening their LoRs. E.g. "oh that letter sucked, I'll go ask another professor"

tldr: Waive your right to access. If you're truly worried about what a letter writer might say about you then ask someone else.
