Actually it's 3 months.

That's even better! I wasn't quite sure how long it was; it's been a while since I looked at the breakdown of classes. Are you going to Wake Forest next fall?

I'm a 1st year there now.

That's awesome! How do you like it?

I like it. The curriculum is nice in the way that first year is set up. I also like the organ system based 2nd year even though a lot of schools are starting to use this. Just let me know if you have any specific questions, and I'll do my best to answer them.

Well, if you don't mind....I'm not so much worried about the academics but more the logistics of moving and finding a place to live. Where do you live now? And how did you find it and your roommates?

I'll send you a PM tomorrow about this. Kinda tired tonight.

Wake just might have made my decision for me.

Melissa in the financial aid office just called me and offered me a full tuition scholarship for ALL FOUR YEARS!!!

Right now, I am kinda numb...

What's your impression of the grading system at Wake?

Holy crap!!! Good for you! That is so amazing!!

It's H/P/LP/F. Some people really care about grades and want the H, so there is a competative atmosphere here (from what I hear some classes are more competative than others). I for one am less concerned about grades than some other people. My objective is to learn as much as I can to prepare for the boards and for life, even if that means leaving out some of the very fine details.

PM sent.

Okay, Important question time...

How are the ladies at Wake?

I am going into this single and wouldn't mind finding myself a nice lady friend.

Is dating tough there?

Congratulations DrThom on your full scholarship. I'm still on the waitlist and I hope to be accepted.

Good luck chooxu. You should call Wake and see where you are in the waitlist. They will tell you something general like top third, middle, bottom third. At least you can get a sense of where you stand. If you don't make it I would strongly suggest that you take the August MCAT and focus strictly on the verbal section. If you only bring the 7 up to an 8 it will make all the difference. Good luck. :luck:

I don't know from experience, but remember, there will only be about 50-60 women in our class and we are not a part of the larger Wake Forest community. I wish we were, but it seems the med school is somewhat segregated. On the other hand, all it takes is one so maybe you'll get lucky.

🙁 🙁 Yeah, the same thing occured to me. Is there a nursing school nearby? 😉

I sent in my pre-enrollment sheet today (YAY!) and I am officially on the "I am desperate for a roommate" list. Wanna be roomies anybody?

That's what I hear...

Actually, I hear we get the printer before we get the actual computer itself...weird

There's like three other universities there, an art college, an all women's african american college, and Wake Forest. There's also women in the graduate school and some of them are on the Bowman Gray Campus. I don't think it will be too bad at all as long as you are trying to get out there and meet people.

I loved Wake when I visited. I'm another person hoping to get off that darned waitlist.

In a few days you should get an email from the admissions office. Tammy sends an excel document with the names of other people on the roommate list. I've gotten two updates from her. So far, the number of people on the list totals....4! Good luck!

You do get a printer... it's actually a printer/copier/scanner... well at least that is what we got last year. And you do get the printer before the computer. You don't get your computer till later in the orientation, and one of the earlier days as you are leaving they just hand you a box with your printer in it. So yeah it is kind of a cart before the horse thing.

Half of your class will be women. There are women in all of the other health sciences like the PA school. There is also the undergrad... The ladies are around, you will just have to convince them that you actually are cool despite being a med school nerd.

Wake is technically pass/fail but don't get caught up in that too much... pass/fail is a total sham. Schools (including wake) still keep track of every point in every class and then rank you according to that... which is what residencies look at. I think Wake is really friendly and a lot of people share notes and outlines. But everyone will work their butt off to get a better score than you.

This was an important question when I came here too. I had high hopes for the city of Winston-Salem, but the nightlife sucks. Most of the undergrads go to frat parties instead of the bar which sucks unless you want to bust up in a frat party. It's been my experience that it is hard to find young professional single women in this town.

try being a single female med student in winston - it's far far worse than being a male, trust me! the males have a far larger acceptable dating pool!!!

Wait, what the hell? 4? I don't get it. Is this ranked?

Oh sorry! I misspoke. I meant to say roommate list not waitlist. Sorry to freak you out.

What's weird is that I totally understood what you were talking about 😕

I know. I totally didn't catch my mistake until that person said something about it. Are you going to wake forest in the fall? I notice you are from northern california. What part? I from there too.

I'm from NorCal too. Waitlisted at Wake, but it's my top choice.

We're definitely both totally from California. I'm from Chico, it's about 2 hours north of Sacramento. I'm on the waitlist, Wake Forest has my letter of intent and I'm keeping my hopes up.

Dude, It would be hella cool if we both got in.

You're from Chico? Lol. I'm from Redding. We're real NorCal people.

Wow cool, so you get to see Lassen and Shasta. Lucky.

Tomorrow the month of waitlist madness begins. The last MSAR says that roughly 150 more people were accepted than there are seats. Other threads have said that there are about 300 students on the waitlist. Since Wake Forest never over-accepts it is possible that half of us are going to make it. Here goes nothing.

Thanks. I'm going to school in Chico because I like it up here too much.

How do you know Wake never over-accepts? Also, are you expecting the Wake WL to move (a lot) in early May or late May?

They say they don't, it actually says it on your post-interview/"you are waitlisted" letter. I'm expecting major movement between May 16th and early June, but I'm also expecting for it to start picking up from what it is now on Monday. This is based on past SDN Wakeforest waitlist threads.

I'll be looking at reapplying in June.

I don't wear glasses or contacts, but plenty of my classmates do. I wouldn't worry about the prescription goggles. I don't think you would need them. Lab isn't usually that chaotic and messy and I don't ever remember getting anything in my eyes. I think they tell us not to wear contacts, but I can't remember. They tell us a lot of things like don't wear open-toed shoes that no one listens to. I would maybe check it out first and then make a decision before wasting any money.

Do you mean that people did not wear safety glasses at all? I have to decide if I'm going to buy prescription safety glasses in the next month or so because I can get a discount with my health insurance until I quit my job in mid-June. Did some people wear goggles in lab or nobody?

nobody wore safety glasses. the only people that wore any eye protection were the ones that had glasses. a lot of people would wear contacts even though they tell you not too; i don't think it's that big of a deal.

Yeah... nobody wears safety glasses. There are a couple of times when they will give you little face shields to wear. Like when you flush the GI tract, or when you are sawing through some major bones, but other than that you don't need anything in my opinion.

I'm another anxious waitlister. I just called to see if they could tell me anything about where I stand on the list, and all I was told was that I was still on the list. I was hoping for a little more info, but I didn't push it.

Good luck to everyone who is waiting! I just want my sanity back, I'm going nuts!

Thanks for the reassurance guys. I will save my money.

Question.

Does Citibank have an origination fee for their stafford loans?

I can't seem to find that anywhere.

I can't seem to find that anywhere.

I talked to the people in Wake's financial aid office and asked about the differences between their preferred lenders. What they told me that the only difference between them was their repayment plans. Otherwise, none of them had any fees. So my quess is that Citibank has no origination fee. I didn't go with Citibank so I'd double check on that before you go with them.

and take some of the repayment with a grain of salt -- you lose/change many of the benefits if(when) you consolidate... for example i have Medloans which had an origination fee of 3% - i just did w/o the little bit of extra money and now i am getting 3.5% of my principle back at graduation! not a bad little sum to move, pay first 2 months rent before i get my first paycheck, etc. you should see if "healthier returns" is still available. i will have borrowed about the max in staffords during med school - ya'll do the math on that one.

there are repayment benefits but once i consolidate (this year everyone is recommending to consolidate right after graduation b/c the rates are goin up - we get to lock in 2.875% for staffords!!!) they will change to whatever the offer is for a consolidation loan.

bottom line is try to keep the future in mind on your loans... they suck majorly but they are a necessary evil and they aren't going away. try to milk them for what you can in before consolidation benefits b/c you might lose them!

Who did you end up going with?

From what I gather, they are all pretty much the same.

I went with Citibank because their incentives seemed to be a little better than the others. I think they are offering 4% cash back or principal reduction at repayment. The terms on their alternative loan were also better than the competition, but you won't have to worry about that DrThom.

None of the preferred lenders had any upfront fees (except Medloans which had a no fee option and also a fee option like AMBinNC described) and the only difference in the Stafford loans seemed to be the bonus at repayment.

The alternative loan is a different story. My interest rate with Citibank is prime, while other lenders charged prime + x% or LIBOR + 2.75%. Also, read the terms of MEDLOANS carefully. They charge some fee (like 1.5-1.75% of principal) at repayment.

I went with MEDloans. I basically closed my eyes and randomly picked one. I did read somewhere that medloans will give loans for residency interviews which, if I stick with them that long will definitely come in handy.
