Cocoabutter, you'll find that there's a lot of housing in the area around the hospital, but it really depends on your personal preference and how much you're willing to spend. at the school website, you can access the housing list for all the latest postings. It's how I found my first apartment. If you want some advice on the listings you've found, let me know which neighborhoods they're in and I can hopefully offer you some advice. Congrats on the acceptance! 🙂

thanks, chrys42!

I have been looking at the properties on the school website as well as this website: www.wilsoncovington.com

Do you know anything about Ardmore Terrace, Bethabara Village, Cloverdale, Little Creek II, or Reynolda Manor?

I have also looked into Dutch Village and Deerwood Crossing. I am planning on living by myself and I am mainly concerned about the safety of the neighborhoods and the condition of the apartment. I like the above places because they are spacious, so that is another factor. Any input would be appreciated since I am in Florida and am not positive that I will be able to come to Winston-Salem before I make my move in mid-July.

Thanks!

Anyone else off the waitlist lately?!

I'm coming out to Winston to find housing next weekend....yay!!!

Hey, guys!

Like mgw519, I will be going to Winston-Salem on June 13 to look for housing.

mgw519: if you notice anything spectacular while you are there, be sure to let me know!

cocoabutter, we'll just miss each other... I'm leaving the 10th! I'll keep you posted... 🙂

hey you guys. I'm not going to be able to get out to Winston-Salem until early July to look for housing, so let me know what you think of some of the places when you visit. I'm dragging my mom and my aunt out to help me look, but I've never had to look for housing before. I have a feeling I may be one of the youngest members of our class.

mgw519, I just looked at my post! I wrote June 13, but I meant the June 10. We will probably still miss each other, though.

jillianrae, don't worry about it...we will definitely help you find housing. I will keep my eyes open for good deals.

Hey everyone. It's official - I'm going to Wake. How's everyone doing on finding housing? I'm from CA and it feels like I really need to fly out there again to look at the properties. Anyone else from out of state want to share experiences?

I'm from FL and will be visiting NC I think the June 23 or so.

I've contacted Crowne Club and Crowne oaks (oaks was recommended by a current MS1) check out Cowne Apartments

As for the class website, I've been working on it for the past week
It's a database driven site and as such I'm doing the php and mysql coding/programming which is taking some time to complete.

The inital site will include a forum, resources, news/announcements, gallery, event calendar. I'm doing the coding for all those except the forum.

I want to make it possible for members to add news, resources etc all from the web.

Sorry for taking so long. I hope to launch at least part of the site this weekend

Hey, Gohan! Where in FL are you from?

Sponch: check out www.apartmentguide.com . It has a very comprehensive list of places to live and should be some help. Personally, I have been using that website as well as others. I am making a list of possibilities so that when I visit Winston-Salem next week, I will have an action plan. I thought about not going and leasing a place without seeing it....but I just can't do it. I am too picky. I have to see it with my own eyes.

cocoabutter,

Thanks for the headsup. I'll check it out. I'm starting to realize that I have to make a trip out to NC to check out the housing. Another cross-country flight -- just when I thought I was done with that. :I

Hi cocoabutter,

I'm from south FL near Ft. Lauderdale 🙂

Sponch I'm in the same boat as you as far as making the West-to-East coast trip is concerned. I'm flying over from central Washington in early July to find housing and then driving over before orientation starts.

Hey ya'll, in my recon missions looking for housing in W-S I've been by Crowne Oaks. N'hood fine, ~15-20 min drive to WFUBMC (depending on traffic).

And as you make your trips to NC, it might be helpful to know that on University (around the WFU undergrad campus and further north) there's lots and lots of stuff. There's a Sam's Club, WalMart SuperCenter, Target, Home Depot, etc.

Looking forward to seein' everyone late July.

P.S. Anyone planning to go on the camping trip before orientation?

There's a camping trip before orientation? That's the first I've heard of it.

Yeah, I haven't heard anything either. Jillianrae, it is probably because we were recently accepted and have yet to receive our accepted students package or whatever. I think that it should be coming soon, though. I sent my deposit last week and they confirmed that they had received it yesterday.

ShaylaFinn, or anyone else, can you go into more detail for those of us that have yet to receive the info?

Putting it up word for word 🙂

I'm not going... my family and I are taking a vacation out to the NC beaches before they drop me off. Maybe next year?!

I don't know if I'll make it. My dad and I are leaving the 20th to drive from Washington to North Carolian, and then I'll have to move into wherever I decide to live. But I'm sure we'll all have plenty of time to get to know each other during orientation. See you all then.

Oh, thank goodness. Camping isn't my thing but I was going to be a sport and go if a lot of ya'll were.

ShaylaFinn is a real team player 🙂
No camping for me either, well have lots of time to bond

Hi- I have been browsing this thread frequently. I am going to be applying to Wake Forest this year and I have lived in Winston for about eight years now. If anybody needs info on housing let me know. There are places in winston that are nice to live and some that are not but are in nice areas.

I would recommend the east bend areas and little privately owned apartments off of Hawthorne. It's convenient. The ardmore area is nice and it is close to the school.

Little Creek - not good.
Bethabara - commute is about 20 min. with traffic.

Don't live immediately off of academy or on the downtown side of Peters Creek Parkway.

Apartments off of Country Club Rd. are good especially towards the Lewisville area. Peacehaven Rd. is nice. If you go to the msn.com page and look these roads up on the map you can get a pretty good reference of what I am talking about. Good luck for all that have been accepted I hope that I will share your happiness of acceptance.

I do research in the anesthesiology dept at the school of medicine and it is a great environment. Team oriented. I was at Barnes and Nobles (the study hub) and I was talking to someone about wanting to apply there and a resident in front me said that she was absolutely loving her residency there. Anyways, if you all need an opinion about an apartment complex (location) let me know.

Also contact the Chamber of Commerce in winston-salem they will mail you all kinds of apartment guides and local info. Plus the homepage for the winston-salem journal (newspaper) online - journalnow.com. you can get the classifieds for privately owned apartments. Hope this helps...my fingers are getting tired. Good luck.

I would really recommend getting a place closer than the undergrad campus. The Ardmore area is nice, there's usually a ton of places to rent, either apts. or houses. I bought a house so I don't know much specifics on apts. anyway, close to the hospital is nice, but I do know of some people in Greensboro but I really don't recommend that. also take a walk through the hospital when you come for a visit, there's always things up on the bulletin boards about places to live.

congrats on all your acceptances!

How's it going guys?!

Anyone get in lately?

Well, I am off to Winston-Salem tomorrow to find a place to live. Anyone made firm arrangements (deposit, signed a lease, etc.) on a place? I plan on doing all of that on my short, three day trip. If any of you out of staters want me to look at something specific while I am there, just PM me or e-mail me!

Hey Cocoabutter,

Have fun in Winston-Salem. I won't be able to get over there to look for housing until early July, so if you see anything that's worth a look, let me know. I'll probably get a 1 bedroom apt because I get along a lot better with my friends if I don't try to share a space with them. (I'm kind of a neat freak).

Hey everyone,

What kind of extra curricular activities are you planning on participating in while you're at Wake? I'm just trying to get an idea of what some of my future classmates' interests are.

I plan on participate in being a well-balanced person. 🙂

No, really. I quickly learned in my undergrad that the key to me not going crazy from stress was to swim laps on a regular basis, run, and involve myself in some sort of musical activity (whether it be on my own at home or in a group).

Oh, and I like to cook and plan on doing so quite a bit. 🙂

I got a call from Sheri this morning!!! I am really excited to see you all!! The happiest day of my life!

Congratulations drkim!

Welcome to the class of 2007 😎

congrats drkim. We'll see you at orientation.

yay, congrats drkim!!!

Hey guys!! Just got back from Winston-Salem. I am sooooo tired! But I had to check SDN!

Congratulations and welcome, drkim! Are you definitely choosing Wake? How long had you been waiting?

Hey Cocoabutter,

Did you find someplace to live?

I found some places with definite potential. If everything works out, I will let you know. PM me if you have specific questions.

how surreal, got the call today. looking forward to really enjoying summer now!

Has anyone heard from geek666 lately?

Congrats and welcome, drkim and gobruins!

Cocoabutter, did you enjoy your return trip to Winston-Salem?

Thank you all!!
gobruins Congrats!!
Yes. i am absolutely set on Wake Forest. i live in Charlotte. Today was my last day at work - Carolinas Med Ctr. I am leaving for NY tomorrow, and for Malawi, Africa on Wednesday for a mission trip. I am coming back 7/21. I will see you all in Orientation.
What would be your first choice APT? I value proximity and low rent. I will probably visit some APTs tomorrow.

Yes, ShaylaFinn, I enjoyed my visit too Winston-Salem. It was interesting driving around trying to find places to live in a city where you don't know where anything is. I managed, though, and actually had the hang of it by the time that I left. I am getting excited about moving there. I have been living at home since I graduated last year and I am so ready to be on my own again. I also can't wait to meet you guys and our other classmates. What fun!

I second wanting to be on my own again. I haven't even been home for a month, and I'm already ready to be out of the house.

Howdy all,

Have any of you decided on housing yet? I've been looking at certain locations indicated in dstn2bmd's post (thanks dstn2bmd
!) but am not planning to visit before I move in. Hopefully I don't end up in a roach motel.

I'm also currently planning to not have a car, good idea or bad? I'm looking for housing that's very close to the hospital to make this possible (I think, I missed the tour during my interview).

Lastly, when is everybody planning to arrive (if you're making the out of state move)? I was thinking July 23rd or 24th to avoid the weekend flight traffic (cheaper airline ticket hopefully). Will this provide me with enough time to settle in?

Edit: Oops, forgot to ask if financial aid information comes with the information packet I was told I would be receiving?

I am planning on moving up on July 17 to give myself time to furnish my apartment, get everything in order, and relax before orientation. I found a nice one bedroom close to campus (but not close enough to walk) for a decent price. I am looking forward to moving in. It was recommended to me by a current student.

As for living close to campus, there were many opportunities. I checked some of them out, and discovered that they were not up to my standards (old appliances and smelly), so I went with a traditional apartment complex instead of renting from a real estate agency. Have you checked out the list available on the school's website? If you go to www.wfubmc.edu/school and then click on prospective students, md program, then info on available housing, the list pops up. I think many of these places are close to campus, but I am no authority considering that I have only been to Winston-Salem twice. Good luck and PM me if you have specific questions.

About financial aid, I called about a week after I got off of the waitlist and spoke with Mrs. Stevens who got everything together and got a financial aid package to me within two weeks. It comes separately from the accepted student package that you receive after you send your deposit. They are very organized and on top of things, so I wouldn't worry. Also, it wouldn't hurt to give them a call to see if there is anything that you can do to expedite the process.
