I'm moving cross-country via car. I'm leaving WA on the 19th or 20th. Hopefully that'll put me in NC by the 23rd or 34th. Guess it all depends on how fast I drive.

Guess you'll be drivin' real slow if you get there the 34th, huh? 😀 j/k

Anybody know if the Medical Center Foundation Apts are a good choice? They have an ad on the prospective MD student housing list and it runs as follows:

Medical Center Foundation Apts., Corner of Queen St. and Lockland Ave. 1 BR, 1 BA, efficiency units featuring large living room and bedroom with walk-in closet. Hardwood floors and off-street parking. Central heating and cooling, coin-operated laundry facility. Tenant pays power, telephone and cable. One year lease, no pets. These units are for medical students only. $260.00/month.

These units were the closest I could find to the school. I've called Rita but she has yet to call me back. I left a message only yesterday however.

Anybody hear of good sources for furniture besides the bulletin boards located in the school?

The Medical Center Foundation Apartments are indeed close to the school. You can walk across the street and be there in less than five minutes. On my visit to Winston-Salem, I met with Rita and had her show me some places. Although cheap, I chose not to go with them because of their condition...they were not what I was looking for and I could not see myself living comfortably there. I saw the $260 efficiency. It was spacious with old hardwood floors, window air, and a bathroom with an ancient bathtub and sink. The kitchen was a stove and refrigerated off to the side as you walk toward the bedroom. It also had a funny smell. I would definitely look at these places before committing. They were not for me, but might work for you. Rita also showed me a few other places, but they were all old and had a funny smell, and just not for me. Keep calling her, she will get in touch with you. She is very nice. Good luck!

As for furniture, I am still trying to find the best place. I will let you know.

if you can manage it, i would highly suggest going to winston-salem to check out the housing. i was originally not going to make the trip, but now i'm glad i did. a lot of those ardmore homes are kind of run down and smelly, so you really have to check them out. we looked at several, each costing about $750/month, and the condition they were in varied remarkably. furthermore, many landlords i've talked to do not feel comfortable renting to a house to someone who's never seen it and someone whom they've never met. good luck!

I'd love to see these properties for myself but my schedule is too packed to allow another visit. I'll make do with the Medical Center Foundation apartments though they're older and smelly (thanks for the heads up cocoabutter, I'll buy some air fresheners or something). Not having a car this year will suck too but maybe I'll get a beater for local driving later. See you all soon!

So lets make an official list of who is definitely going to Wake Forest, when you are moving, and where you will be staying. I'll start:

Also thoughts on wfusom2007.com? the forums etc?

Gohan,

I think the website looks great. The only glitch I see is that, although I registered and logged in, I can't reply to anything on the forums. I get a screen that says it can't find my screen name. Otherwise, everything looks great.

Hi Jillianrae

Because it's actually 2 applications comprising the site, the main one which I coded and the forum which is separate. As such you must register for the forum separately. I'm sorry about that. I'll post an announcement about it on the main site. You may register with the same username if you choose. Those are the only registrations that will be required.

Anyone else headed to Wake this fall?

It looks as though we will have a very small class.

Hey there kids... Anyone else out there who is heading to Wake?

My car is getting put on a semi tomorrow, packed full of all my crap, to be shipped to Winston-Salem. It's a little unnerving to shove all your earthly possessions (sans furniture) into a Volkswagen Passat and hope that it turns up on the other side. Eeeek! (especially when I haven't heard anything from the shippers in days...)

My dad told someone that the only things I get to take with me is what will fit in my nissan sentra. I certainly hope he means the rest will be shipped, or we're going to be having words soon.

Just as well. I don't know where you're moving from, but the quote I got from UHAUL was $3000 for a truck with a hitch to tow my car. What a rip off.

AH, those wonderful West Coast-East Coast moves. Sponch, jillianrae is moving from Washington State, and here I am in the Bay Area too. I looked into a Uhaul, and might have done it had the orientation date not been so relatively early... not to mention that all my furniture is pretty nasty and definitely NOT worth hauling in an expensivo Uhaul. I'm going to need to get some new (used) stuff in Winston.

Hence, shipping the car, conserving my time, and "streamlining" my life according to what can fit in a sedan. 🙂

Sigh. I never knew I had so much crap!!! 🙄

CA to NC dwarfs my FL to NC. I don't have much to move only the essentials: COMPUTER and ahhhh?? I should make a list 😀

Gohan, I envy you. I have no idea how I'm going to get everything moved.

MGW519, good news. Everyone tells me that NC is the heart of furniture country and that you can get stuff pretty cheap over there.

I wanted to get a uhaul and tow my car (it's only about $1200 from where I am), but my dad refuses to drive a uhaul across the country. I'll probably either end up getting furniture over there or having mine shipped.

Anyone else think the summer is going by awfully fast?

I'll also have to purchase furniture when I get there

Anyone else think the summer is going by awfully fast?

What summer? 😕
It's 26 days 18 hours 59 minutes and 00 seconds
until orientation

It's 26 days 18 hours 59 minutes and 00 seconds until orientation

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Hummmm, I wonder if the furniture places would give us a discount if the whole class went in to buy furniture. 😀

What makes me really sad is that there isn't an IKEA any where near Winston-Salem. 🙁

Sponch,

Doesn't IKEA have a website?

Where is the nearest IKEA, and will you have a car so that you can drive yourself there when the urge to shop gets unbearable?

What up.

The closest IKEA is in Atlanta. 🙂 They do have a website, and they do deliver; however, someone told me that it can get pretty expensive that way.

I don't know. I DO know that there is a Pottery Barn outlet in Charlotte where you can get stuff for 50-75% off! Not to mention that High Point is the furniture capital of the world, and I've been informed that there are lots of options, many of them at a discount if you can find them.

jillianrae, when are you leaving on your apartment hunting trip? 🙂

I'm flying out of SEATAC at 6:00am on July 4. So far, I've have appointments on Saturday and Monday to look at somwhere between 8 and 12 apartments. If I find one quickly, then I'll probably look at furniture.

So much to do, so little time.

Hey guys!

I need to furnish my apartment also. I don't think that it will be too hard since, like mgw519 said, and I have heard, High Point is the furniture capital. What I did not know about was the Pottery Barn outlet in Charlotte. Thanks for that tip! I will be there. I did not have a chance to look for furniture while in WS, but I have been doing a little shopping online---I think that it should go well. My only worry is delivery time. I don't want to sleep on the floor for 2-3 weeks. 🙁

Let's all watch Jillianrae make a fool of herself.

What is pottery barn? I've heard of it, but I have no idea what kind of stuff they sell. (I'm sitting here thinking that everyone can't possibly be talking about a store that sells ceramics).

You're not alone Jillianrae

I had no idea what IKEA was but I know what pottery barn is
They are similar as far as I can tell home furnishings etc

Let's all watch Jillianrae make a fool of herself.

Thank-you Gohan, I don't feel quite as dumb now.

Don't feel dumb, Jillianrae! I only found out what it was about a year ago....and I am just being delusional. I can't afford anything that they sell. I just like outlet stores because sometimes you can get crazy sales.

a little bit of delusion is good from time to time. Believe it or not, one day we will cease to be poor college/grad students.

Wow, there's a whole bunch of people living at Bromley Park. Good stuff, I moved in there in May, and I really like it there. As for talk of IKEA, I think the closest one is actually in Northern Virginia -- apparently that's where most of the North Carolinians go to shop. I was at that store once, and they had some really nice things, so it might be worth checking it out. As for High Point and furniture, I went one afternoon to see what they had, and I thought a lot of it was still expensive despite the discounts (at least for my budget). In addition, it was more of the fancier furniture variety... I ended up buying most of my furniture at a discount store in Winston on Jonestown... they had decent stuff at pretty good prices.

Crazy to think that the new year is starting soon! Hopefully you'll have good things to say about the orientation activities that my class is planning. 🙂

And the countdown keeps ticking and ticking and ticking...

Is anyone else getting anxious/nervous?

25 days 9 hours 50 minutes and 59 seconds

This summer is going by too quickly!!!
I've added the event calendar module and of course the first event is the 28th 😎

Hey ya'll. I'm getting very excited about school starting, too.
I've been to the Pottery Barn outlet and they've got good stuff, but I don't think they deliver. Everyone brought flatbed trailers and SUVs to haul their stuff home. Also, I think the outlet is right near the NC/SC border, just south of Charlotte.

I've also been to the Ikea in VA. It's right off I-95 in Potomac Mills, just south of DC. Most of Ikea's furniture requires at-home assembly, so bring a small toolbox with you (screwdriver, etc.) if you'll be going that route.

High Point, NC is known as the furniture capital and there are tons of furniture maunfacturers. High Point is < 1 hour drive from W-S, but my experience has been that a lot of the stuff is display only and they custom-order your actual pieces. For example, it took 3 months for me to receive the couch and chair I bought. But you can get lucky and purchase the floor samples at deep discount if you happen by at the right time.

Good luck apt/house-hunting, Jillianrae!

Can't wait to meet ya'll. 😀 -SF

I am excited!!! I am moving in 2 weeks. Even though I have no furniture....I can't wait. I love shopping. Also, it will be exciting to meet you guys and the rest of our classmates. Of course, I am also anxious/nervous because we are undertaking a huge endeavour, but its going to be worth it. Personally, I don't mind the summer going by quickly. I graduated last April (2002) and have been working. It will be nice to just be able to focus on school. I know, I know, I am such a nerd.

chrys42, could you elaborate on that discount store. It sounds like its right up my alley. I also found that the furniture in High Point was out of my price range.

Well,

I'm off to Seattle to catch my flight back east. Hopefully, the next time I talk to you guys, I'll have a place to live in Winston-Salem. Have a great holiday everyone.

cocoabutter, I can give you directions as to how to reach the store, but the exact name fails me. You take Business I-40W and take the Jonestown exit. Turn left at the lights, and right after, there's a plaza on your left-hand side, which is where the furniture store is.

thanks, chrys42, I will definitely check it out.

just finished packing up the truck! we're hitting the road first thing in the morning for the 2600 mile drive out to NC. can't wait to hit the books again. 🙂

have a great drive, sponch! my car was shipped on thursday, and I'm flying out next monday. 🙂
