Wal-Mart vs. Rite Aid; Which one is better option to work for as a pharmacist?

I work for RA. I have an excellent staff but I work 12 hour shifts and I am the only pharmacist there most of the time. I occasionally have overlap and I fill 300-400 RXs a day. I have a couple of good friends that work for Wal-Mart. They do 8 hour shifts and have a few hours of overlap on most days. RA is not as bad as some people make it out to be. No matter where you go, there will always be some level of corporate bull****. Every chain has its ups and downs. My opinion is that retail is retail, no matter where you go.

Do you want to work for a profitable company or going to be bankrupt company?

I called a local Walmart the other day for a copy. I was on hold for like 10 minutes. Since I was on hold for so long I was multitasking and doing other things on the computer. Once the pharmacist finally picks up, I say "hold on a minute please." She says, "You want me to hold on? No! You hold on." And then she hangs up. I wonder how much she enjoys her job? On the other hand, I called a RA pharmacist recently for like 3 or 4 copies and he was very professional in lieu of losing all of those scripts.

Really? 🙄

I think it was Angry Pharmacist that made the same complaint. "I called Wal-Mart and they put me on hold forever, and they're the only company that ever did that, and they're evil, and the pharmacists suck..." the list goes on. People rightly called him on it in the comments section of the blog.

Every pharmacy and every pharmacist can have a bad day.

I think Wal-Mart does have some pros: the pay, nice annual bonus, MANDATORY lunch period if there's only one pharmacist working

Cons: you don't have "incentive" programs to transfer prescriptions, but you DO have the massive $4 list and low prices on a lot of other drugs, so customers sometimes have absolutely no loyalty to you or your staff and are just there to chase down the cheapest Z-Pack in town.

The walmarts in my area are always busy only because there isnt any pharmacies too close by. My friend works for Rite Aid and he loves it only because hes at a slow store and I know Rite Aid you get paid overtime. Rite Aid is supposedly going bankrupt but from what my friend tells me the copy has 5 good years left. But dont know if that is true.

At my old pharmacy school the students were very anti-walmart only in the sense that they are a corporate company only carrying about getting money and not with health care. Where they drive other pharmacies and alot of independent pharmacies in the area into the ground.. But hey I figure isnt all retail chains like that?

I would go with the company that will put you into a good location

Walmart has more staff...but more work.

I think long-term Walmart is the best choice because you will not automatically lose your job when RA goes under. And, there is market saturation almost all over in pharmacy. So, in a few yrs, you might not be able to find another job that easily.

Thanks for your answers... Regarding the location, What would be your favorite location/s (which states)?

(I am very flexible, however not sure which states/areas are better to apply for retail jobs, considering all factors)
