I knew they did for flu shots, but WHY would they do this for a vaccine that is required by no entity I know of, costs several hundred dollars and insurance coverage is dicey, and is given only once in a person's lifetime?

Oh, yeah. It's Walgreens.

Cvs has a quota for it as well! Also the pneumonia vaccine has quotas. I don't know of any pharmacists getting in trouble for not meeting their quotas like with the flu shot.

Most Medicare plans cover it. Sometimes people with the weird tier plans have to pay 95 dollars. Others pay their regular 6.60. Some get it for free.

Why? Because the profit margin is pretty high.

If you read the insert on Zostavax the company sponsored study done which is probably biased quotes a VE of only 51%. Subjects were followed for an average of 3.1 years. The insert says they couldn't even determine an effective titer. I guess that's why they need to have scary commercials on TV which say "the virus is already inside of you" in a low creepy voice. They will come to the rescue in a few years with what they do when people realize a vaccine doesn't work. A booster. They can name it Zostavax HP.

Walgreens has flu and non influenza goals which are tied to pharmacy manager bonus. While there is a goal for each vaccine, bonus metrics aren't based on individual vaccines, but total vaccines. Needless to say, my flu goal is 82% higher than last year. Sounds insane, but we destroyed our goal from last year and seems attainable this year.

CVS has a little box that pops up in the computer whenever you are talking to someone that makes you ask them if they want one. After about 20 of them, I've realized that nobody wants one on a cold sell.

So, how would CVS' computer know for sure if someone asked? Do they record every single thing that goes on in the pharmacy?

they know everything! my supervisor called me one day and asked why I didn't call on ALL transfers out Rx. I told them I did but not for this week because same patient transferring out due to being out of town. she understood my reasoning but wanted me to call anyways because they log all calls. I jump ship shortly thereafter

Welcome to big corporate bureaucracy, where people that understand nothing about medicine tell you how to practice. (just like the government)

My parents both paid full price for it, and were not reimbursed by Medicare or their Part D(isaster) plan. That was a few years ago, however.

I HAVE been told more than once by people who have had shingles that they would have paid 10 times the cost of that vaccine to have had the ability to avoid that horrible disease.

....well there's the problem...it was years ago. Plans don't cover new drugs right away.

except with CVS.... I don't think we are being punished for not making Zostavax and Pneumovax targets. To be honest, I don't see how we can push it. This is not something that we immunize the same customer every year like what we do with Flu.

Says you! I know of some stores/ pharmacists that have given these to the same patient several times because they had no clue it was a one time deal.
