Hello. I have been accepted into Pharmacy School 🙂thumbup🙂 this year . I have several paths I would like to take with my career. I would like to work in retail for some time but in the long run, I would like to work clinical (I want to develop a vaccine for Malaria). My pharmacist says that the job market is becoming saturated and would continue to. I know Walgeens offers some miniscule assistance ( about $7000 in total if I am not mistaking) in exchange of you working for them after you are done. My pharmacist thinks that I should apply for that assistance so that I have a secured job when I graduate. He also says that if I decide to break my contract with them, all I have to do is to pay as soon as possible, all the assistance I have received. I may not need to pay interest if I pay on time. He did the same thing but he actually did not and has not spent that money just in case he was to leave the company. What are you thoughts on this? Please, this is a legit concern.

I actually think it's a good idea, and am planning on doing the same. Walgreens doesn't have an interest fee if you do need to pay them back. Also, say you get out of pharmacy school and you can't immediately get a job hospital/clinical.. Walgreens would prefer to hire you because you already owe them something than another person who doesn't. Just my opinion though...

Some of my upperclass mates got job offers already. The word is that it is saturated in major cities. Lots of jobs in outside the big cities. Pharmacy is a competitive marketplace like any other field, no longer guaranteed and handed to you like a few years ago.

Not too many clinical jobs out there, 1-2 per hospital perhaps. They can be competitive because of this. Retail however, have openings everywhere. You just have to know the right people and have good timing.

Wags offer 2,500 per year now. 10k to be exact.

Good luck.

If you want to develop a vaccine, don't get a PharmD. Go get a PhD in immunology.

What exactly is the difference between PharmD and PhD besides the obviouse PhD is research based....??

What isn't the difference... a PharmD is specialized in pharmacy only. You can get a PhD in just about anything from something in the social sciences to every facet of science. It's a specialized degree where you must do research and a dissertation. It typically takes 5-7 years on TOP of a bachelor's degree to get your PhD. If your ultimate goal is research or academia then PhD is the way to go.

I understand what a PhD is. I was wondering the diffference between a PharmD and a PhD specifically in pharmacy. Like, can a PhD pharmacy graduate dispense medication? Things of that nature...

No such thing as a PhD in pharmacy anymore.

Oh, sorry I misunderstood your question 😳

I also thought about taking that route. But I would like to also work in a pharmacy (retail, hospital or clinic) so that s why I am getting a PharmD instead. It is my hope that I will somehow get a chance to get more education applicable to research.

No, but there is such a thing as a PhD in Pharmaceutical Science or a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry, or a PhD in Pharmacology.

And many schools offer combined programs that can get you a Pharm.D and also concurrently get you on the way to earning your PhD.
