Hi everyone,

Would it be unrealistic to think I could move into management with Walgreens or another chain after just 2-3 years as staff pharmacist?

What are the main things they look for in promoting to managment positions?

thanks,

G

For most chains they are looking for someone dumb enough to volunteer. For all the extra work and responsibility it isn't worth it. You certainly do not get paid enough extra to make it worth while.

I noticed on some pharmacy job sites some companies (i.e., Walgreens) doesn't list that they are recruiting for managers but just staff pharmacists. While other companies post that they are recruiting staff pharmDs as well as managers (i.e., Target). Does Walgreens recruit for their managment positions through different job websites than they do for their staff positions?

Yup, the pay is crappy... you get 0.50 cents to a few dollars more. However you also get benefits like crazy amount of stock options (versus my 2k stock option per year), and company car.

i read somewhere that some pharmacy managers were paid $70~$80 per hour. i don't remember where it was or exactly what types of positions they were. but what kind of a pharmacy manager would you have to be to get paid $70~$80 per hour?

director of pharmacy at medium to large hosptials..

very large academic hospitals, I've seen salaries up to 225K per year.

Oh how I would love to know how much you make. Even a range. Pleeeaaase.

Eleventy billion dollars.

Range? More than an employed retail pharmacist but not more than a very large academic hospital DOP.

Not too shabby. I bet your hours kick ass.

My full compensation is hard to quantify..only thing set is my base pay and benfits. Bonus and travel benefits add up also.

I work M-F and no weekends or holidays. Only time I would work on weekend is if I'm traveling on Sunday for a monday morning meeting which is rare or only occur for golf tournaments. I don't have set hours when working from home...I usually sit at my desk around 8 am.. then shut off my computer at 4 ish. But I had to learn to do that because there were many times I set thorough until midnight working on stuff.

When I travel, I try to minimize my visit to 1 hour per site because DOP, Clinical Manager and pharmacists are busy peopole unless I'm inservicing or making presentations.

I set my travel schedule up to month or 2 in advance to fit my schedule..no one tells me where to go or what to do. My goal is to work from home every other week and for the week of travel, I usually leave the house on Monday and back by Wednesday. I make an effort to be home every Friday. I have a job duty and I simply do it.

I love my job.

I think I just creamed my pants.

Please, if you ever need like an administrative assistant or some chit like that, holla. I will agree only if I get to sit by the window, if not, well forget it then.

I got lucky. When I graduated, there were no jobs. It was before the retail boom. Wal-Mart didn't even respond to my application. Savon didn't give me an interview..just sent me a letter saying there was only enough room for people who interned at Savon.

Get this, I interviewed at Long's...but didn't get the job because I didn't have any retail experience...I guess 3.5 years of intense hospital setting work wasn't good enough.

So I took a job as a evening staff pharmacist. I really wanted to do retail.
Then progressively I got promoted... I left hospital practice 2.5 years ago to do consulting management gig.

You can do what I do... Do a residency and an MBA. I didn't because it wasn't what I wanted. But I also paid my dues doing a lot more beyond what was asked of me..to learn what I know today.

For those RM/DM who didn't hire me, I sincerely thank you.👍

Damn, great story. I still can't believe Long's didn't hire you. hahaha. *****s.

Nope, residency is a no for me, I don't agree with the pay structure. However, I am planning to take my bcps once I'm eligible. I hear every year they're getting harder so the sooner the better. If I can find a cheap/good MBA program, I plan on applying. Key word being cheap.

That'll work...

and I have lots of stories.

I know DMs make at least $8-10 more. So RMs should at least make more than that. But yeah, I'm sure it will vary widely depending on company and location.

Those jobs do indeed suck.

The next level supervisor is called an RPM or Regional Pharmacy Manager with my company. They make a couple of dollars more than a Pharmacy Manager. There are four of them and a Director of Pharmacy over them. I hope the DOP makes some money but I doubt it. I am sure it is the equivalent of $10 an hour more. It is still not enough to entice me. Not that it’s all about the money. As an RPM you do not work nights, weekends or holidays. So it has its benefits other than pay.

You can be offered a Pharmacy Manager position in just one year. I get the impression that you make about $10-15k more per year. Plus, marginal bonuses for busy stores. It's true that some managers demote themselves.

I'm talking about youuuur overhead. You're gettin off easy in TX too!

Our Real Estate is way cheap...well compared to WV probably not much.. but property tax is high which counters no state income tax. But our Energy is expensive due to de-regulation.

I left CA twice. If I wanted to move back, I'll have a job in OC in no time. Nice weather is nice but that alone can't entice me enough. Food is overrated as my cooking is better than your typical restaurant food..gourmet or not. Taxes are high in CA and there're just too damn many people there.

For me, CA is a place to visit to remind me of 2 things.

1. I made the right decision to move out.
2. See #1.

Also when Texas secedes they're probably going to attack California.

Last week a report came out saying I'm in the best state for business (Virginia). Imagine that.

I believe Texas came in #2...didn't they? And no... TX wants no part of CA... that's one bankrupt state...

160K? 170K? am I right?

You are making pharmacy school look more worthwhile now! 😀

My bad. 190K? 200K? The point is pharmacy school is more worthwhile than I thought after hearing about your salary. 😛

I will plead the 5th.. but my job is an exception not the rule.
