Hi has anyone accepted this scholarship besides me? I go to school in another district than the one I did my summer internship in, and I currently am working 8-16 hours a month near my school (which is paid for by my home district). I was recently told, however, due to financial reasons that my hours would no longer be paid for by my homestore and I am wondering..

Is accepting the walgreens scholarship a guarantee that you will get a job after graduation? If not, then are you still forced to pay back the money if you aren't offered a job?

Also, how hard is it to transfer districts?

You are the first person that has ever accepted that scholarship...congratulations 👍

And your sarcasm is very helpful 👍

Thank you for your insight

by "Anyone" I mean anyone in this forum b/c you may know that these forums are not read by the entire pharmacy community

wow...someone that can take a sarcastic remark and not act like a two year old about it! I think you can hang out over here on this side of the forums now...usually pre-pharms start crying about how unhelpful we are!

I do know people that took the scholarship...they are guaranteed jobs but there is no guarantee where you will be working. It's very similar to what you are experiencing now. Since you are signed up, you are at the mercy of walgreens.

Transferring districts is no problem as long as your DPM is not a douche bag and there is a need for pharmacists where you want to go.

whoops I need to update my profile then because I am actually a P2, not pre-pharm like my profile says.

I accepted the scholarship for 2 years so far. And yeah, you'll be at the mercy of walgreens. I won't be accepting it anymore b/c I've decided I don't want to work at Walgreens for the extended future. Not my cup of tea, personally. You should be able to transfer districts as long as you're not transferring somewhere that there is no demand. Again, you might not get your choice of store and you may have to float. Just heard a story today of a new RPh in the town over that was promised to stay at that store full time and now has to float all over our district.

to me, walgreen's "scholarship" is a bad joke. They amount they give you is small, and it's not free if you don't work for them after grad. Basically I see it as a bad joke of a sign on bonus. I passed on that both years.

Yes it is a small amount, but I felt like it was a good idea because I am taking out loans that are accruing interest while I am at school. Even if it is just 2k one year, it is 2k less I have to borrow with grad-plus loans which accrue interest, and then if I don't work for them, I will just pay it back (even if I have to take out loans my 4th year if I need to). So that money wouldn't have been accruing interest the past two years.

But I am debating now whether I want to work for walgreens because I am having some issues in my home district which I do not want to get into.

concerns with taking the "scholarship":

If you use it towards tuition, then when you graduate and don't want to work for walgreens, you'll need to cough up $8-$10K cash right out of school. Not something you can come up with an instant, so you'll be stuck working for them for a while, and you might miss another job somewhere else. bah!

I thought about just putting the money into a money market account to earn a little bit of interest off of it, and return the money at graduation. But then I realized that money in a bank account would increase my EFC on FAFSA, decreasing my need-based scholarships. Nixed that idea real quick.
