I've never been to that area before. Any suggestions for hotels nearby that are safe and have needed ammenities (WiFi, workout facilities, proximity...)?

I'll defer to those who have been there more recently, but I can't think of many places nearby that you would want to stay at if you value your life.

Maybe in the rebuilt part of Silver Spring there is something, but you might be better off staying a little further away like in Bethesda or maybe somewhere else in DC.

Look farther out, like Silver Spring, Bethesda, Rockville, Potomac, or even College Park. Don't get a place in Virginia or DC itself. Are you on ADT orders, and will you have a rental car (hopefully, yes).

One place at which I had to stay recently is the Bolger Center in Potomac, MD (http://www.dolce-bolger-center-hote...overview.asp?gclid=CLbbi5jiw5wCFQxM5QodGwT3ow). They offer all of those amenities that you asked for, and are on 90 acres of land, with gyms and a nice running trail around the center. Also, they are quite cheap (like $90-110 a night when I was there in June), so long as you don't mention that you are a government employee (then, they up their rate to the local per diem rate).

This is one of them that was recommended by an employee at the Malogne house http://www.hotels.com/property.do?p...|1|0|0&CIDay=6&sortBy=PROXIMITY&s=1&CIMonth=9

Anyone ever stayed here?

You might consider the Navy Lodge at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda. It's maybe 15 minutes from WRAMC. I think it's about $70/night.

Going to be at WRAMC for an ADT in about a week. I'm authorized a rental car. Are parking costs reimbursed if the hotel charges for it?

By far the best choice. Safe (on base). Walking distance to downtown Bethesda. There's also a free shuttle from NNMC to WRAMC, direct, door to door every 1/2 hour during the day. Parking at the Lodge is generally not an issue. Parking at WRAMC IS ALWAYS an issue. Also, the Medical Center Red Line Metro stop is across the street at the NIH. It's a 20ish minute ride into your spectacular nation's capital.

Another vote for the Navy Lodge. You'll be right across the street from the medical center's gym, and the shuttle to and from WRAMC is uber-convenient. There's no commissary at Bethesda, but there's a decently stocked shopette and McDonald's within a 2 minute walk of the lodge. Lastly, the restaurant district of Bethesda is a quick bus ride or 15 minute walk or so. There's something for everybody there, but I was particularly fond of a couple of micro-breweries that I think are worth checking out.

My former attending speaks the truth about the Navy Lodge. However, with the construction at NNMC the parking pendulum has swung. Parking during work hours is now immeasurably more difficult at NNMC than WRAMC, even the lodge lot is full by 0830 with resident, staff, and ancillary staff cars. As long as one takes the shuttle to WRAMC and uses his POV only on nights/weekends, things should be fine.

For the carless, I recommend the Navy Lodge or downtown Silver Spring (up Georgia Ave.).

Probably will be an intern at Walter Reed next year. I do not like driving to work. I prefer walking first and then maybe biking. I understand that the Walter Reed area isn't the greatest, but I was thinking of enduring the shady neighborhood, getting a really cheap studio or sharing a two bedroom apartment (in the $600-800 range) and banking a lot of BAH intern year before moving closer to Bethesda for PGY-2. Any recommended crap holes to live in for PGY-1 year within ~1 mile of Walter Reed?

There's a boatload of apartments in Silver Spring, especially around the intersection of 16th and Colesville or EW Highway at the DC/MD border. It's almost exactly one mile and 16th is relatively safer than Georgia. It's also closer to Rock Creek Park and easy to get to NNMC on East-West Highway. It's also walking distance to the Silver Spring Metro station which is also safer than the Takoma Park station. The Blairs is one that I can remember off the top of my head, there's a lot more, many cheaper.
