Hi everyone, I am applying during the 2026–2027 cycle through TMDSAS only. I would appreciate an assessment of my chances at Texas schools and feedback on the major strengths or weaknesses of my application.
cGPA and sGPA:
• TMDSAS cGPA: 3.56
• TMDSAS sGPA: 3.41
• I began at community college and performed well there. I had a difficult transition semester after transferring, including a D+ in Organic Chemistry I, which I retook for a B- the following semester. My performance improved afterward, although my transcript still contains a few B/C-range science grades from that second Junior year semester. Mostly As before and after that.
MCAT:
• 518: 129 C/P, 132 CARS, 128 B/B, 129 P/S
• One attempt, May 2026
State of residence/citizenship:
• Texas resident
• US citizen
Ethnicity/race:
• Black/African, Sudanese immigrant background
• URM
Undergraduate institution:
• Attended CC before transferring to the University of Texas at Dallas
• BS in Neuroscience, graduated May 2026
Clinical experience:
• Approximately 3,500 hours as a paid emergency department scribe from October 2023 to April 2026
• Worked across four emergency departments serving rural, suburban, urban, immigrant, and underserved populations, including a Level I trauma center
• No separate clinical volunteering
Research:
• Approximately 260 hours over five months in a transcranial photobiomodulation laboratory
• Contributed to a pilot study investigating photobiomodulation for neuropsychiatric conditions
• Assisted with study protocols, data collection and organization, lab meetings, and an internal literature review comparing pulsed versus continuous stimulation
• No publications, posters, or presentations
Shadowing:
• 8 hours with a PM&R/pain-management physician
• I had extensive physician exposure through 3,500 hours of scribing, but I am not counting that as formal shadowing
Nonclinical volunteering:
• 350 hours as a volunteer assistant wrestling coach at my former under-resourced public high school
- Helped run practices, mentored athletes, provided transportation, handled tournament scoring/refereeing, and helped support athletes during competitions
• Adult GED tutor at a local public library
- Began around the time of application submission
- Listed 72 hours through September 2026, with an additional 240 hours projected through August 2027
Other extracurriculars/leadership/employment:
• University wrestling club coach for four semesters
- Developed practices and lesson plans, taught technique, worked individually with athletes, secured outside gym access, and expanded competition opportunities
• Scribe trainer
- Trained new scribes in ED documentation, clinical information recognition, physician preferences, and workflow
• CDS Attendant Manager/Designated Representative
- Help manage my younger brother’s state-supported caregiving services, including monitoring care, managing my mother’s hours, and communicating with the caregiving agency
• Previous employment at a tea shop and an Amazon warehouse
• Long-term interests include wrestling/grappling, lifting, and reading
Honors/awards:
• Dean’s List at CC for Fall 2022, Spring 2023, and Fall 2023
• No major nonacademic awards
Anything else:
• Born in Sudan and immigrated to the United States as a child
• Fluent in Arabic
• First-generation prospective graduate/professional student
• No institutional actions or conduct violations
School list:
• All TMDSAS medical schools, including both MD and DO programs
• No AMCAS or out-of-state applications
How competitive am I overall for Texas schools? As I am currently in my gap year what would you recommend I pursue in the case of a reapplication? I have an interview with a research lab for a full time research assistant position later this week.
