Concerns and Questions:

  1. School List Recommendations:
    • Given my stats and experiences, which medical schools would be a good fit?
    • Are there any schools I should consider adding or removing from my list?
  2. Lack of Clinical Volunteering:
    • How detrimental is having zero clinical volunteering hours?
    • Should I prioritize gaining clinical volunteering experience before applying?
  3. MCAT Score vs. GPA:
    • Does my MCAT score of 511 significantly impact my application given my 4.0 GPA?
    • Would retaking the MCAT be advisable? (studying I felt rushed and I felt i was making progress in the last few weeks)
  4. Strengthening My Application:
    • Any suggestions on areas I should focus on to enhance my application?
    • Are there specific experiences or activities that could fill gaps in my current profile?

Additional Notes:

  • I'm aware that my research hours are on the lower side.
  • My leadership roles have been a significant part of my college experience.
  • I'm passionate about community service, as reflected in my involvement with Camp Kesem.
  • idk if a dual md/mba program would find my application interesting

Welcome to the forums.

What is your plan to let go of your startup? Why are you making the change now, and why is your startup relevant to your application review (given that you have redacted the details)?

Who is writing your LORs? Are you involved with any mentoring organizations for black aspiring physicians, especially black males?

I included the mention of my startup to highlight its relevance to my leadership development. Leading this business has required me to cultivate high-level management skills, especially in overseeing a team of 20 employees and scaling operations to the point where we are now receiving offers for acquisition. We are carefully evaluating these offers to ensure we choose the right one.

In terms of my Letters of Recommendation, they are being written by a professor I’ve studied under, a physician I worked closely with, a former employer, and a professor I served as a preceptor for. While I’m not currently involved in any formal mentoring organizations for Black aspiring physicians, my startup experience and academic journey have provided me with a wealth of mentorship and leadership opportunities.

Also, I saw your question on clinical volunteering vs. clinical employment. For me and I think most of us experts, overall clinical exposure counts, and we have to put employment vs. volunteering in the proper context of your application/situation/schedule. I don't see it as an issue, but sure... you can always add more of one or both.

Do you have other non-clinical community service activities, such as food distribution, shelter volunteer, job/tax preparation, transportation services, or housing rehabilitation?

I don't think you need to retake the MCAT if you have a strong list of schools that fit your purpose. Have admissions professionals at the schools you want to attend tell you to retake the MCAT. Howard/Oakland/Tulane will have a different answer than Stanford/WashU/Hopkins. Your in-state Virginia schools and maybe the DC schools (GW/Howard/GT) are your best shots, so pay attention to them. I would also check other HBCU schools if they fit what you want (Charles Drew, Morehouse, Meharry).

You should already be able to narrow your current list down if an MD/MBA is on your mind.

You do not need clinical volunteering since you already have clinical employment hours. You have a good list and should receive several interviews.
