I would love to have some recommendations on additions to my school list! Due to financial constraints I can only apply to 10-15 schools. As a disclaimer, I know my MCAT is holding me back. I want to apply this year, but understand it is a possibility I will have to reapply next year with another MCAT attempt. My top choice is BSOM, but I am very open to DO schools and I agree with the holistic philosophy!
NC resident, ties to PA (grandparents live here, both parents from PA), ORM (white, non-binary)
Non-trad, 3 gap years since undergrad, mid-twenties, no other physicians in my family, worked full-time since Sophomore year to support myself.
Public Health, Minor in Anthropology - GPA: 3.79, sGPA: 3.62 (Dean's List every semester)
MPH in Epidemiology / Biostatistics - GPA: 3.95 (One "B" entire program)
MCAT: 502 (122/126/125/129) (ran out of time during C/P due to anxiety attack)
Research: ~400 hours (clinical research intern, data collection assistant), completed thesis but no publications
Clinical experience: 6000+ hours (medical assistant, now assistant manager of pediatric outpatient practice & vaccination coordinator full-time for multiple years)
Volunteering: ~50 (Crisis TextLine)
Non-Clinical Experience: ~3000 hours (leasing consultant for student apartments full-time in undergrad)
LOR: Four strong letters, one MD from work, one MD from MPH, two PhD from MPH
Shadowing: 30 official hours through a specialized undergrad program, but many hours working closely with the MD at my office
Personal Statement: Strong in my opinion, discuss my interest in medicine and overcome barriers (working full-time in undergrad throughout pandemic, medical issues)
Student Orgs: President of international student organization, included paid travel to conferences
I have already submitted my AMCAS application to Brody SOM (top choice with strong ties) to get my application processed on June 4th, but otherwise have not submitted any other applications through AMCAS or AACOMAS. I received my MCAT score on 05/29, and was genuinely surprised. It is the biggest part of my application holding me back, as I do not meet the minimum requirements for many schools. I recognize the best option is to retake the MCAT, but with working full time, financial constraints, and it likely delaying my application and negatively effecting my odds this cycle, I have chosen not to retake. I know I am a better candidate for DO (and I agree with the philosophy!) but wanted to apply to at least 4-5 MD schools if I meet their requirements. I would prefer to live in states without anti-LGBT laws for the protection of my family (Florida, Texas). I care significantly more about student-centered, holistic programs rather than simple prestige. I am most interested in primary care! East-coast schools are even better due to family but am willing to consider anything to follow my dreams.
MD: Brody (TOP choice), Wayne University, West Virginia University, MSUSOM
DO: Rowan-Virtua, PCOM, UNECOM, Campbell, NYITCOM, EVCOM, Michigan State, LECOM
