This might seem very overkill to apply this cycle, given the terrible stats that I have. I am currently on my second gap year. I would like to apply and get into any DO school in the nation. I have one more MCAT attempt left and I plan on retaking if my score is too low. I was suggested by an instructor to take an SMP and to take the MCAT and get a 504-506 range. I'm not sure what to do, as if I don't do well in the SMP, I can essentially get banned for DO schools for good. I also am not sure if I can afford two years of tuition to raise my GPA. I really want to apply and get in this cycle in any DO school but if I take the MCAT in September (I have been studying) to raise up my MCAT to a 503. Would it at all be possible for me to have an admission?

Are you saying you have already taken the MCAT 6 times with your highest score 488?

I haven’t taken it 6 times. It was my first attempt. Sorry it’s a typo! I meant before applying for this cycle

AAMC allows a person to take a total of 7 tests in their lifetime. That's why when I saw "I have one more MCAT attempt left", I assumed you had run out of chances that way.
Time to study in between testing dates is important, so give yourself at least 2-3 months between tests to find your weak areas and practice.

I understand that you are probably feeling personal and family pressure to apply "now".
If DO school is your goal, you don't need an SMP to bring up your GPA.
You are not ready to apply this year without:
- An MCAT score 498 or better
- At least 150 hours of community service activities, non-medical related.
If you find someplace for your community service, as simple as helping out at a food bank, and build up those hours while you are also studying for the MCAT, you will have a much better chance of getting in.

Yes, absolutely. My bad, and I apologize for the confusion! Got it, this definitely makes sense. I’m averaging around 499-500 on AAMC practice tests, so I’m really looking to boost up for those last 3-4 points (hopefully in a month and a half). Thank you, I’ll definitely work on getting non-clinical volunteering in, too!
