Hello. I am currently a senior hoping to apply this coming summer to medical schools. The pre-med curriculum at my school is known for being rigorous and having lower gpas but higher acceptance into med schools compare to national averages. I am on the fence about retaking my MCAT because I was working 2 jobs while studying in order to financially support myself so I know I could do better, but the timing of fitting in a retake would be difficult. I know my stats are "average" but I hope to only take one gap year as I believe I have strong extracurricular experiences despite having limited family support and being first-gen and low income at my school. Should I retake my mcat? If not, what would be a good starting list of schools to apply to?
  1. 3.74 cGPA and 3.6 sGPA
  2. 510 (127, 127, 126, 130)
  3. Minnesota resident
  4. South Asian (Bengali)
  5. T2 in Boston (think Tufts, Boston University, Boston College)
  6. Medical Assistant in Internal Medicine at MGH (550+ hours)
  7. Research experience in lab at my university, related to child development and play, currently in lab at children's hospital studying autism. (350+ hours in current lab, 200+ in old lab)
  8. shadowed a pediatric neurologist, very impactful. Also shadowed a neurosurgeon. I know I need more shadowing hours.
  9. volunteered abroad in iceland to help feed and engage in social programming for a community of asylum seekers, also volunteer at a boston elementary school (100+ hours)
  10. Leadership in two clubs, one focused on fitness and wellbeing. the other club is to help minority students in stem. adiditionally 500+ hours at a minnesota elementary school, and other customer service jobs to financially support myself (barista, summer residential life, 200+ hours)
  11. Difficult family background, grew up muslim, however identify as lgbtq+ (urm??)

Your main weakness is your non clinical volunteering in this country. You have only 100 hours of volunteering in an elementary school. You should accumulate 150+ hours in an activity such as food bank, homeless shelter, etc. before you submit your application. Otherwise, you could be screened out at some schools. I suggest these schools with your stats:
U Minnesota
Medical College Wisconsin
Rosalind Franklin
Oakland Beaumont
Wayne State
Ponce (St. Louis)
TCU
Roseman
Alice Walton
Belmont
Methodist
NOVA MD
Wake Forest
Eastern Virginia
Virginia Commonwealth
George Washington
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
Penn State
Albany
Vermont
Quinnipiac

You know you don't have the hours. Don't apply until you have 150 hours of clinical exposure including 50 hours of shadowing. You also need 150 hours of service orientation activities as suggested: food distribution, shelter volunteer, job/tax preparation, legal support, transportation services, or housing rehabilitation.
