I switched from prelaw to premed my senior year. With that, my GPA took a hit in science classes. I’m considering DPM programs, but if I still have a chance for DO I’d like to at least apply. My trend also isn’t great- from freshman to post bacc: 3.5, 3.0, 3.6, 3.7, 3.8, (COVID hits) 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 3.1

1. GPA and sGPA as calculated by AMCAS or
AACOMAS
cGPA: 3.5
sGPA: 3.1

2. MCAT score(s) and breakdown
510- 128, 127, 127, 128
3. State of residence or country of citizenship (if non-US)
Ohio

4. Ethnicity and/or race
White

5. Undergraduate institution or category
Ohio State University

6. Clinical experience (volunteer and non-volunteer)
Baseline concussion testing for high-school athletes- 40 hours
emergency room technician- 500 hours
Volunteer: Columbus free clinic- 30 hours

7. Research experience and productivity
BME Parkinson’s research for Cleveland Clinic- 440 hours

8. Shadowing experience and specialties represented
Internal DO: 100 hours
Ortho MD: 75 hours
Pediatric MD: 20 hours
Ortho DPM: 40 hours

9. Non-clinical volunteering
Need to bump this up outside of what is seen below.

10. Other extracurricular activities (including athletics, military service, gap year activities, leadership, teaching, etc)
Social Fraternity: President- led 130 men in a fraternity respected by the university through COVID (my university rep is writing a letter of rec). Also organized fundraising and philanthropy events for National Alliance on Mental Health and United Service organization.
Currently serve as alumni corporation President

One Health Public Health Club- Philanthropy Chairman- organized philanthropy events for homeless families foundation and American Red Cross.

Organic Chemistry Peer mentoring/tutoring

Internship at Ohio House of Representatives(from prelaw days)

11. Relevant honors or awards
Ohio State Public Health Buckeye- featured student for college of public health that focused on my hospital work, and One Health advocacy.
Multiple Deans Lists

12. Anything else not listed you think might be important
Environmental Public Health Major, studio art minor.

Please let me know what you guys think! I planned to apply to OUHCOM, LECOM, PCOM, and UNECOM, but I’m not sure of my chances given my GPA. If DO is still worth looking into, I’d love an expanded list. Otherwise I will explore DPM further.

FYI, my late switch has caused me to take two gap years. I do not want to take more if I cannot be accepted this cycle.

You are competitive for most DO schools with your stats. In addition to the ones you list you could add any of these:
Touro-NY
NYITCOM
CUSOM
MU-COM
WVSOM
ACOM
UIWSOM
TUNCOM
KCU-COM
ATSU-KCOM
NOVA

You can ask WAMC in the Pre Podiatry forums. Metrics- wise you should not be a problem getting A's from Podiatry programs so it's up to you if this is what you want, no regrets. KSUCPM will be interested in you.

OUHCOM should also not be a big challenge given that you can choose a campus for preclinical. Network of your can.

Thank you so much for your response. This is reassuring. Would it also make sense to apply to some in-state schools such as Wright State, Toledo, or NEOmed? I don’t necessarily prefer DO or MD at this point. I simply wish to maximize my chance of acceptance. Thanks!

I have talked to podiatrists and would definitely want to go to Kent State because I could commute from home and save a lot of money. I have read that thread extensively and am confident in my chances there.

While I know with DO/MD I have less room to be picky given the selectivity, OUHCOM would certainly be my first choice because I could continue to live in Columbus with my partner and near my friends. I would also have the same commuting option with their Cleveland campus, and I’ve heard great things from students in their program. I am glad to hear I have a solid chance there.

Thanks for the input; you hit the nail right on the head with what I’ve been considering.

Yes, it is worth applying to Wright State, NEOMED and Toledo.

Faha it’s been a while but quick question- would Midwestern be worth applying to?
