Good afternoon,

I had a horrible cycle this year with 0 interviews mainly because of my very low ECs and horrible school list. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to help me create a one based on the stats I have right now:

cGPA: 3.94 sGPA: 4.0 MCAT: 520 Casper: 2Q PREview: 5

180 hours of shadowing

1400 hours in a wet research lab (still on going will get likely up to 1800 by May)

160 hours as volunteer MA (will have ~240 by May)

50 hours of tutoring at my Uni

I don't have any non-clinical volunteering as of yet which I really regret doing. I am currently volunteering at a local food pantry this semester and will likely rack up ~80-100 hours by May

I am an MA resident and ORM

Taking a gap year will be financially hard for me so I really want to reapply in May. Thank you in advance for the help!

What does your school's premedical advisor recommend that you do? Have you had them look over your application and your LOR to be sure that your writing is acceptable and your letters are good? Despite your lack of clinical hours and volunteering, it's surprising that you didn't even get an invite from your state school, so I wonder whether your application has a flaw of which you are not aware.

My university for some reason does not have a premedical advisor. We are just told to go to our regular university advisor for stuff and they don't seem very well versed with med school stuff.

I have gotten my writing looked over by my research supervisor who is really good at writing and another professor at my Uni as well. They both helped me edit it and said that it came out really good.

Previously,

Previously,
I had about 160 clinical hours at the time of submission of my current app. I;ve also sent updates stating I had accumulated more over the semester. Is ~200 still considered low. I am not trying to get into top tier MDs and my first choice was my state school which I really mentioned in their secondaries. I also thought I gained a lot of experience from this MA work and was able to write about my meaningful experiences there.

UMass really values service and clinical work, and your hours were light in those areas, but not so light as to be insignificant. Have they stopped sending interview invites?

Your complete lack of non clinical volunteering and low clinical volunteering hours are the reasons you did not receive any interviews.
Accumulate 150+ hours at the food pantry before you submit your application. Many schools screen at 150 hours. I suggest these schools if you accumulate those hours:
UMass
Tufts
Boston University
Vermont
Quinnipiac
Hofstra
Mount Sinai
New York Medical College
Albany
Rochester
Hackensack
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
Pittsburgh
George Washington
Virginia Commonwealth
Duke
Wake Forest
USF Morsani
Miami
TCU
Washington University (in St. Louis-almost a guaranteed interview with your stats)
Rosalind Franklin
Medical College Wisconsin
Western Michigan
Ohio State
Cincinnati
Iowa
Illinois
Colorado
Arizona (Phoenix)
Kaiser

I have already been rejected by them pre-interview. This was very confusing cause my undergrad is also one of the UMass campuses.

I understand. I have actually been trying to do this right now. I am looking for a volunteer opportunity for this semester and hoping to rack up 150+ hours. Thank you so much for the school list, I truly appreciate the help!

If you went to a UMass undergrad, this is the resource I found
Pre-Med | University of Massachusetts

I am disappointed your regular university advisor didn't point out other resources you could have accessed. It's not like being on one campus necessarily prohibits you from seeking other advisors. To your credit, you did find us.

I understand that taking on a gap year may be financially challenging. I would encourage you to take the gap year and NOT apply at the same time because that would cause you more financial and additional emotional distress. Apply when your profile is optimal, not when you think it's convenient. The worst thing you can do is rush a reapplication without showing adequate improvement.

I see. How much more would you recommend in terms of hours to make my application competitive. Again, I'm not really aiming to get into a T10 but rather whoever will take me with the stats I have now. Due to some other life commitments, it is extremely hard for me to dedicate time to other activities, which is why I don't really see taking another year off as a benefit. I feel that I won't be able to accumulate as many hours as one would expect from a gap year.

See if someone from the adcom would be willing to speak with you after the “season” is over and give you advice for improvement. Also reach out to former classmates who are in med school and ask them to take a look at your application.

Hi everyone,

Sorry this is probably like my third WAMC at this point. I have high stats, but I recieved 0 interviews last cycle due to a bad school list and very low ECs last year. I am reapplying this cycle with an increase in hours that I hope to increase my chances this time around. I also fixed my school list which was WAY too top heavy.

Here is my app:

MA resident ORM
Public undergrad (just graduated a few weeks ago)
4.0 and 520

180 hours of shadowing

~2000 hours in a wet research lab with 3 posters and an abstract

~300 hours as Volunteer MA

~50 hours tutoring at my uni

~30 hours at a community outreach and education program hosted by a big name hospital in my state (will continue until fall so projecting another 100) This is new for this cycle

~50 hours + 200 projected misc. non-clinical volunteering at a local health center (also new)

I also didnt get a letter from a medical professional last cycle, but this time I was able to get 2 letters from the 2 physicians I shadowed
