Hi y'all. I would really love to get into Maryland, VCU, Georgetown, or GWU to stay close to family, both for me and my significant other. What are my chances, and anything I can do to improve my app to these schools? I'm applying next cycle. Maryland resident, white, female. I know that these schools place a lot of importance on service work. Plans so far: finishing my BSN and continuing my existing service commitments (jail, harm reduction org, UNOS, student mentor, student advisory board.)

  • 3.1 GPA 1st BS (Biochem) at a Maryland state school, upward trend with C's in orgo, physics. 3.8 GPA 2nd BS (Nursing) at University of Maryland.
  • 517 MCAT 128/130/131/128
  • Work:
    • Clinical paid: 3000 hr clinical research/medical assistant
    • Non-clinical paid: 4000 hr admin and marketing
    • Unpaid internship: 1000 hr, Medicare and Veterans Affairs policy
  • Volunteering:
    • Clinical: 150 hr free clinic in VA
    • Non-clinical: 150 hr jail in MD, 100 hr harm reduction organizations in MD and VA, 30 hr housing insecurity org in DC, 30 hr UNOS organ donation tables.
  • Leadership
    • Student mentoring 50 hr, free biology tutoring 50 hr, student advisory board 60 hr
  • Research
    • Lab: 250 hr in molecular bio lab
    • Poster presentations: 2 first author, 1 fourth author. Both first author presentations have to do with underserved population health.
  • Letters
    • Committee letter from Maryland state school
    • MD letter from Hopkins doc/former employer
    • PhD research mentor letter
    • Nursing professor letter
    • Could ask for letter from supervisor at free clinic
  • 100 hours shadowing various specialties

What is your sGPA and cGPA including both your degrees ?
Thanks for replying Faha. For my first (biochem) degree, my cGPA is 3.1, and my sGPA is 3.25. For my second (nursing) degree, my cGPA is 3.8, but it doesn’t really have sGPA since all classes are classified as “NURSxxx”.

With your nursing background and high MCAT you could receive interviews at those schools. However, 4 schools is far too few schools to apply to. Broaden your geographical horizons and I suggest adding these:
West Virginia
Eastern Virginia
Penn State
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
Seton Hall
Hofstra
Einstein
New York Medical College
Quinnipiac

Thanks so much. I will definitely apply broadly. Do you have any specific suggestions for improving my application for these four schools in particular? I have plans to continue my existing volunteer commitments, and start a new harm reduction project in my Maryland community this year. But I am not sure what else to I can do with my time to make my application stand out in the eyes of these institutions.
