Hey everyone, I’m looking for some honest feedback on my chances for medical school. I know my stats aren’t the strongest, but I’ve put in a lot of work to build my experiences. Would love to hear your thoughts on where I stand! Plan on applying to this upcoming cycle. (fall 2026 entrance)

Stats:

  • MCAT: 499 (123/122/124/123) → 501 (124/123/129/125)
  • cGPA: 3.56 (strong upward trend)
  • Residency: Texas
  • Ethnicity: white
  • Education: transfer from Sam Houston State University to Texas A&M University
    • graduation spring 2025
Extracurriculars:

  • Research: 500 hours
  • Shadowing: 400 hours
  • Volunteering (Non-clinical):
    • 1000 hours with a church organization
    • 60 hours at a juvenile center in my county
  • Clinical Experience: 100 hours
I know my MCAT isn’t competitive, but my GPA has been improving. I have a lot of experience in both clinical and non-clinical settings, especially in volunteering. I’m hoping being a Texas resident gives me some advantage with the in-state schools.

I would love to go to SHSU COM but I am not sure if I meet their average stats. Do I still have a good chance for this school? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

school list interested in for upcoming cycle application:
1. SHSU-COM
2. OSU-COM
3. VCOM - Monroe
4. UIW - COM
5. Burrell
6. Campbell
7. LMU-DCOM
8. LECOM
9. NYITCOM
10. ACOM
11. KYCOM

Welcome to the forums.

Can you provide details and follow the WAMC template? The details are important, so the more you can provide, the better. This isn't about calculating your chances from a formula; holistic review and mission fit are real things.

Have you reached out to DO schools? You aren't DOA for many, including newer schools that need to fill their classes.

Sorry for that mistake on the template, I will edit my original post to fit the criteria.

I am looking to apply for this upcoming cycle.
I have reached out to shsu com and discussed my passion for rural medicine and my fit to their mission. I was very upfront about my stats and they said it was nothing to worry about as long as I submitted early, however, I don't see many people with similar stats to me getting accepted here.
Additionally, I reached out to some other MD schools and have not heard positive things given my stats.
I could reach out to other schools as well but I have not done that yet.

Agree with the above, and potentially I also think OSU is a bit of a reach but may be reasonable with ties and proximity in Texas.

I think you would be DOA at all Texas schools - including TCOM - other than SHSU and UIW as you listed.

I am a current SHSU first year that had a 500 mcat score when I applied last year and I am doing well in school. I did have quite a bit more work experience in the medical field but by no means does your score discount you from getting in here. If you want, you can shoot me a message to talk more about it.

You do realize that in order to apply to SHSU you need to apply via TMDSAS and not AACOMAS? I personally don't think it's worth applying the $125 or whatever fee it is and filling out the whole TMDSAS application just for one school.

If you do apply via TMDSAS, you should shoot your shot at every school. It's a flat fee whether you apply to one or all 12 schools.

yes I do know this and that is how I plan on applying, I just wanted some insight into specific DO schools for OOS as well as some advice on my application overall. Thank you.

But why are you not going to apply to the other TX schools? I don't think it's wise to just apply to SHSU because I've seen them not take students who are at their stats and take students well above but also below. I'm not entirely sure what they look for in students tbh.

Also, why not TCOM? Which is a much better school than SHSU.
