Hi. I plan to apply to about 25-30 schools in total but currently have more than that on my list. I’m looking for help shortlisting the ones where I have a realistic chance of being seriously considered as a Texas resident with my background.

Here are my stats:
ORM Texas Resident
Reapplicant
Completed my pre-med undergrad from a T10 public school.

cGPA and sGPA are 3.93
MCAT - 511 and 513.

Clinical - 840 hrs (including volunteering at a hospital (225 hrs), 53 hrs of Shadowing, 120 hrs scribing, taking vitals etc at ???, and 445 hrs as a PCT.

Non-Clinical - 336 Hrs (including 133 Hrs at a local food bank, 85 hrs on 2 separate community health projects, 105 hrs volunteering for a major university club focussed on health, 25 hrs tutoring underprivellaged kids affected by COVID).

Research - 122 hrs with no papers published.

Leadership - 3 leadership positions at school clubs.

I plan to apply to all 13 TMDSAS (MD+DO) schools + the following
DO (13)
  • OSU-COM
  • LECOM
  • VCOM
  • CUSOM
  • ATSU-KCOM
  • NSU-KPCOM
  • WesternU-Comp
  • UP-KYCOM
  • WVSOM
  • WCUCOM
  • OU-HCOM
  • MSUCOM
  • TUCOM-CA

MD (11)
  • TCU Burnett
  • Tulane
  • University of Illinois
  • Rush Medical
  • Loyola
  • Rosalind Franklin
  • Carle Illinois
  • Loma Linda
  • UC Davis
  • UC Riverside
  • UCLA
TIA

Hi, were you a late applicant to TMDSAS, or do you think there was something missing from your original application like community engagement or shadowing/clinical experience?
Did you get the chance to interview last time?

Hi Wysdoc. I applied (TMDSAS) very early last cycle - mid May. I received 1 invite and was waitlisted. The problem was a lack of community service last time which I now have . Maybe my 511 MCAT had something to do with it as well(?). Honestly, I’m not sure what went wrong. With the added community service, new role as a PCT and improved MCAT , I’m hoping for more attention this time. Would appreciate application advice and help with my school list. Thanks!

On your DO list OU-HCOM admits very few non residents.
On your MD list UC Riverside does not admit non residents and UC Davis only 3 to 4 per year. Carle Illinois is looking for applicants with an engineering background. Rush is looking for applicants with many hundreds or thousands of hours of non clinical volunteering.
For AMCAS schools you could try TCU, Tulane, Belmont, Oakland Beaumont, Loma Linda (if you fit their mission) and Alice Walton and Roseman when the latter 2 open.

Hi Faha. Thanks for your suggestions. What is does it mean to have "ties" to a specific region from a Medical school admissions perspective. Does being born and brought up in a region but not currently resident there be considered as having ties to the region?

Yes, those are ties so you could try Rosalind Franklin. Loyola and Rush are looking for applicants with may hundreds or thousands of hours of non clinical volunteering. The CA schools (except Loma Linda) admit few non residents with your stats.

I also wanted some feedback and to make sure that the application right now doesn't seem to have any glaring gaps that could prevent admission. Any advice on this would be very helpful!

If most of your clinical and volunteer hours are new since last time, I think that was what was missing from your resume.
It’s an important factor even with good grades, and a big reason to have to reapply.
