Hi everyone,
I’d appreciate some honest feedback on my application and school list strategy. I’m a California resident applying MD this upcoming cycle. I applied broadly to MD (No DO) programs in the previous cycle. 1 interview(Highish ranked school) and haven't heard back yet. I would love if I could get some feedback, any holes, and what school list to do. Secondaries Submitted mid July to the end of August.

Stats
  • GPA: ~3.9 (cumulative and science, graduating 2026)
  • MCAT: 513 -> 519 (Cars Jump, all others constant)
  • Preview: 2 (might have been an issue, but not all schools look right??)

Research
  • ~2,000+ total hours across multiple labs
  • Current research assistant in a T10 Med School
    • One abstract accepted to a regional conference (2nd author)
    • Manuscript in preparation for a major journal
  • Prior undergraduate research in genetics
    • Manuscript in progress, conference abstract under review (2nd author, will know abstract result by APP time)
  • Additional experience in a biotech lab
  • 3 School Research funding awards, presented at 3 End of Year School Conferences

Clinical Experience
  • Long-term hospice volunteering with direct patient and family support (500 hrs)
  • Hospital inpatient volunteer experience (300 hrs)
  • Outpatient vascular clinic volunteering (120 hrs)
  • ~100+ hours of physician shadowing across multiple specialties (medicine, surgery, cardiology)

Community Service & Leadership
  • TA for Bio courses (180 hours)
  • Additional community service with food insecurity and unhoused populations (100 hours)
  • Tutor as part of an organization for underprivileged children (120 hours)

Teaching / Employment
  • Standardized Test tutoring (HS kids) (150 hours)

One long-term hobby sport (4+ years) that I am passionate about.

Which schools did you apply to and where was your interview? Your low non clinical volunteering hours (outside of teaching) was a factor in your poor application cycle as some schools screen at 150 hours and you had 100 hours.

You should better prepare for PREview. Having a 2 is underperforming most applicants who take the exam (most matriculants should get 6+) and shows a lack of understanding of academic culture. While it is unclear how schools use PREview, the few incoming students who were dismissed from medical school for non-academic reasons appear to have low PREview scores (see research articles in the Casper/PREview/SJT forum).
