Went to CSU

Clinical experience: 700 hours CNA in SNF, 1600 CNA inpatient addiction, 850 ED scribing, 220 hours free health care clinic volunteer

Research: 800 hours computational chemistry +2 publications. Wondering if this sticks out as well since most my research was computer based

Shadowing: 120 hours shadowing hospitalists and ED physicians

Non-clinical volunteering: 240 hours mentoring student, 450 hours teaching Arabic, 120 hours homeless shelter

Other: 450 hours as an ochem TA, 150 hours over years fundraising for food, made local hiking group for woman in my area

Relevant honors or awards: Dean's List, large scholarship + mentoring program for my school, 2 ACS scholarships for doing programs in high school, grant scholarship from research

I really want to stay in state or at least in the Western area. I have been debating doing a retake in May for better chances for CA schools or should I apply anyway and see? That way, I am not trying to rush and can take it again if needed.

Welcome to the forums.

Are you a reapplicant? Why do you want to be a physician? Why do you want to stay in California or around "the West"?

You have tons of hours with teaching. What did you do at the homeless shelter? You should get at least 150 hours before you submit your application or your application may be at risk of getting screened out.

I would apply to DO schools if you want to avoid reapplying.

Hi, this is my first time applying. I grew up low income and have seen experiences personally in my life and working where patients could have avoidable crises but had social detriments of health like financial, time, literacy, and more. I want to work in preventive care in helping educate patients about their health and finding accessible solutions by meeting patients in their circumstances. My homeless shelter volunteering is mainly helping greet patients, helping with meal times, tacking their attendance, and helping in activities.

I am very close to my family and wanted to at least be able to stay in my home state or in the nearby areas. I was planning to apply to two of the CA DO schools, Touro and Western

If you want to stay in California your options are limited with a MCAT of 507. If you are willing to attend MD schools anywhere in the country I suggest these schools with your stats:
Vermont
Quinnipiac
Albany
Penn State
Drexel
Temple
George Washington
Virginia Commonwealth
Eastern Virginia
Wake Forest
Methodist
NOVA MD
Belmont
Alice Walton
TCU
Ponce (St. Louis)
Rosalind Franklin
Medical College Wisconsin
Oakland Beaumont
Wayne State
Roseman
Brigham Young (when it opens)
California Northstate
California University
Loma Linda (if you fit their mission)
UC Davis
UC Riverside (if you are from that region)
For DO schools I suggest these:
WESTERN
TUCOM-CA
CHSU-COM
TUNCOM
AZCOM
UIWSOM
KCU-COM
ATSU-KCOM
DMU-COM
NYITCOM
Touro-NY
PCOM

I would take on more hours in the homeless shelter. I would also see if your free clinic can connect you with a community health worker or train you as one. Your description of educating patients and finding accessible solutions means being a CHW should help you there. Now it's a question of how important being a doctor is.
