Background:
  • ORM
  • Ohio resident, undergrad at small state school
Academics:
  • Major: Biomedical Engineering (going into last semester)
  • cGPA: ~3.85
  • sGPA: ~3.8
  • upward trend
  • MCAT: 515(129/128/129/129)
Clinical Experience:
  • 150 hours volunteering at hospice in VA
  • I plan to scribe during gap year
Shadowing
  • 25 hrs total (split between ortho/peds)
Non-Clinical Volunteering
  • 150 hrs-tutoring at inner-city community center
Research Experience
  • ~50 hrs in nanomedicine lab working on own project (projecting ~150 hrs by end of undergrad)
Work Experience
  • 2000 hrs- landscaping (leadership experience)

Early in undergrad, I went on a mission trip to South America. I was naive and unaware of how these trips are looked on. I'm most likely not going to include this in my application but does the fact that I have strong ties to SA make this experience worthwhile to include?

Preliminary School List
  • All OH schools
  • Mayo
  • U Mich
  • Pitt
  • Boston U
  • Emory
  • Drexel
  • Hofstra
  • Dartmouth
  • Temple
  • Gtown
  • Saint Louis
  • Kimmel
  • Tufts
  • Miami
  • Rochester
  • Stryker
  • Einstein
  • Creighton
  • Geisinger
  • Loyola
  • Penn State
  • Iowa
I would appreciate any feedback on my list/improvements to make. Thank you!

You have a good list and should receive several interviews. Your best chances are your Ohio state public schools.

I've also heard that "medical mission" trips are basically seen as tourism with a little volunteer work -- would it be wise to go on one for about a month or is it not worth it for the app? I would like to help impoverished communities in Africa medically, but if I did do this, should I really leave it off my app?

Get in more hours in volunteering (ideally double), and double your shadowing hours. Right now, ECs are too cookie cutter.

See my mods to your list above, and also add:

Albany
Rosy Franklin
NYMC
EVMS
Wake Forest
Temple
Creighton
Tulane
Seton Hall
MCW
Loyola
Western MI
Uniformed Services University/Hebert (just be aware of the military service commitment)
Nova MD

ECs are lacking. Almost no research or shadowing is going to definitely hurt you. Your academics are great so make sure you are focusing on building your application. I recommend the following to build your app:

Volunteering with less fortunate than you (Ex. I tutored Hispanic kids that couldn't afford tutors)
Apply to be a research assistant or nursing assistant at your hospital (build clinical experience or research experience)
Shadow more specialties for more hours

If you build up your ECs, you'd be a great applicant that would probably get a few acceptances.
